dge here in the High Sierra. The University of Nevada, Reno is developing a multi-campus approach to solving the environmental challenges associated with Lake Tahoe’s air- and watershed, incorporating important issues such as sustainability more directly into the curriculum and developing exciting new ways to engage our students through the learning environment that is Lake Tahoe.

This week on Meet Our Faculty, we’re introducing you to Professor Talley Kayser.

Talley teaches “Life, S*x, and Death: What the Salmon Say,” a weekend course built around watching the Kokanee salmon spawn at Lake Tahoe, where she brings in science, literature, and reflection to help students process what they witness. She’s also a poet and prose writer whose work explores the relationships between humans, other species, and the places we share.

Talley also teaches Rewilding Your Attention in the Age of Social Media and Literature of Environmental Justice at the Lake Tahoe campus.

“It still doesn’t feel real.”

That’s Hunter Gardner (Hunter Gardner) talking about his semester at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe. He’s a science major specializing in ecological restoration, going into his junior year, and last fall he decided he wanted to do more than sit in class. So he hiked. Over 300 miles of trails and around 64,000 feet of elevation gain in a single semester, camera in hand, then back in time for class the next morning.

Some of his favorite learning happened outside too. In his biology course with professor Chris Smith, his group set up motion sensor game cameras near Tahoe Meadows to study snowshoe hares, and ended up capturing bears, deer, and squirrels along the way.

Today, the Tahoe Discovery Lab welcomed members of the Nevada Tech Hub and other industry partners to campus for a sneak peek at some of the advanced equipment helping shape the future of battery innovation, research and workforce development in Nevada. Graduate students affiliated with the Tahoe Discovery Lab also shared their research at the event.

“One of the strategic opportunities we see at Lake Tahoe is the ability to serve as an incubator for new academic programs,” said Professor Chris Jeffrey, the Harold Walter Siebens Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe. “We have incredible programs and expertise on the main campus, and Tahoe gives us the agility to bring people together across disciplines, test new ideas and create opportunities that can ultimately strengthen programs across the University.”

Hearing from Jeffrey (Hitchcock Center for Chemical Ecology) and Chris Barile, the Clemons-Magee Endowed Professor in Chemistry, and other partners highlighted the opportunities for students to learn how to move their ideas from concept to real-world impact.

These investments are helping expand research and training opportunities, strengthen Nevada’s talent pipeline and connect students with industry partners working at the forefront of the state’s growing lithium battery and clean energy economy.

“I want to help UNR turn out innovators and entrepreneurs,” said Eugene Wong, Managing General Partner at The Reno Seed Fund, who was also in attendance.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Thomas Horvath as the new Vice Provost and Dean of the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.

With more than 18 years of experience in higher education leadership, Dr. Horvath brings a strong commitment to student success, academic excellence, research, and community partnerships. He currently serves as Dean of the College of Science at California State University, Monterey Bay, where he has led initiatives focused on student achievement, research growth, and external partnerships. He has also served as interim dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services. Throughout his leadership career, Dr. Horvath has worked to expand educational access, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and align academic programs with workforce and community needs.

As Vice Provost and Dean of the Lake Tahoe campus, Dr. Horvath will advance its academic mission. His experience developing partnerships and supporting student success will be invaluable as we continue to build the future of the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe. We look forward to the vision and leadership he will bring to the Lake Tahoe campus beginning November 1, 2026.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to Interim Vice Provost Doug Boyle for his dedicated leadership and service during a period of tremendous growth for our campus.

Meet Dan Hyatt, a fiction writer who joined us this fall.

Dan is part of the low-residency MFA in Creative Writing, which brings students together for 10-day residencies each January and August. He is here this week for his first one. Ask him about the program and he does not talk about the writing. He talks about the people.

Before the short stories came four decades in law, a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam, and years on the bench before he retired in 2014.

David Slattery spent most of his life in Las Vegas and recently retired from his career before starting his first year as a poetry MFA student at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe. He discovered poetry about eight years ago through an audiobook by David Whyte, and it stuck. For David, poetry says what no other genre can, and it’s a way to bring a little light into the world. Coming back to UNR held special meaning too. He started medical school on this campus 37 years ago. 🏔️
