UNR at Lake Tahoe Earn credits, explore sustainability and immerse yourself in experiential learning at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.

The University of Nevada, Reno began operations at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe on July 1, 2022, after entering into an agreement to acquire Sierra Nevada University in Incline Village, Nevada. This spectacular 18-acre setting in the fragrant pines of Incline Village opens up opportunities for our students, faculty, staff and friends to learn, teach, research and share their knowledge here in the High Sierra. The University of Nevada, Reno is developing a multi-campus approach to solving the environmental challenges associated with Lake Tahoe’s air- and watershed, incorporating important issues such as sustainability more directly into the curriculum and developing exciting new ways to engage our students through the learning environment that is Lake Tahoe.

Dr. Christopher Barile, the Clemons-Magee Endowed Professor in Chemistry at the University of Nevada, Reno, takes us inside the Barile Laboratory for the next talk in the Tahoe Series. His group uses chemistry and electricity to tackle everyday energy problems.

He will cover two lines of research. The first is turning carbon dioxide into useful fuels and chemicals by designing materials that control how those reactions unfold. The second is a new generation of smart windows that switch between clear and dark with electricity, cutting glare while buildings use less energy for heating, cooling and lighting.

“It’s hard to describe how special it is, especially in this place with this group of writers and with this faculty. There’s magic here.” Jamey Baumgardt, MFA faculty and alum

Each summer, the low-residency Master of Fine Arts program brings artists and writers to the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe for 10 days of workshops, lectures and critiques that run from morning until night. In 2026, students painted, wrote children’s books and created tattoo-inspired work on paper, all while refining the projects that will become their theses. Between sessions, they shared meals, traded ideas and cheered each other on as they presented their work to the cohort.

Earlier this week, a room full of meadow people got together at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe to dig into one question: what makes meadows so special?

The workshop, hosted by the Tahoe Institute for Global Sustainability, brought University professors, grad students and alumni to the same table to figure out how to protect meadows, pulling from more than one field at a time.

And there’s a lot worth protecting. Sierra Nevada meadows pull carbon out of the air and store it in their plants and soil, and some of them hold more than 20 million kilograms of it. They filter water, keep watersheds healthy and give a huge mix of plants and animals a place to live. Some meadow plants even start photosynthesizing under the snow, while it’s still freezing out.

Already missing Classical Tahoe? So are we.

This summer, during Classical Tahoe 2026, violinist Christian White (Christian White) took part in Chamber Connections at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe, and he sat down with us to talk about his process. Christian first picked up the violin in sixth grade, graduated from the University a year ago, and has spent the past year playing professionally with groups around Reno and Tahoe. He’s also an engineer, which is part of why music matters so much to him: it’s the one place where his creative side gets to lead.

Originally from the mountains of Colorado, Molly is an artist whose work moves between sculptural ceramics, image-making, and collage. She has been an artist-in-residence in Ireland, Canada, Hungary, and across the U.S., and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Here at Lake Tahoe, she also manages our campus galleries and coordinates the Summer Art Workshops. Her advice to students: stay curious, and don’t feel like you have to define yourself too narrowly.
