Ed Hartman ’86 is a 2026 IUP Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and A 2019 inductee into the IUP Athletics Hall of Fame.

Hartman was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986 and played four seasons professionally, earning minor league MVP honors.

He went on to build a standout career as a financial and business leader. Today, he serves as executive vice president of Business Operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates, overseeing finance, human resources, strategy, and technology, along with development assets and key partnerships.

As founder of CFO BI LLC, Hartman led the successful turnaround of a $360 million transportation company. His career also includes leadership roles as CFO of Aires, executive vice president and CFO of the Buffalo Sabres, and CFO of Basis100, formerly a Toronto Stock Exchange-listed company.

IUP Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Christine R. Hardy ’99 grew up in Philadelphia and persevered through teenage motherhood while pursuing her education.

She balanced the demands of law school with raising a young family, going on to build a successful career as a trial attorney, litigating transportation cases nationwide.

In 2014, she joined Norfolk Southern Corporation and was named deputy general counsel and chief data privacy officer in 2020. In this role, she advises on complex corporate, regulatory, and commercial matters while integrating legal strategy with enterprise goals. She also developed and implemented the company’s first data governance and artificial intelligence governance frameworks.

Hardy continues to give back through her service on the board of Cool Girls, Incorporated.

IUP Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Michael Formica ’82 built an extraordinary 43-year career in the U.S. Army and federal service.

He served 27 years as an officer across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, including commanding 3,500 soldiers during combat operations in Iraq. That service earned him the Distinguished Service Medal.

After retiring as a colonel in 2009, Formica continued his impact as an Army senior executive. That service leads initiatives that saved $25 million annually. Today, he is one of only 25 Army Tier 3 senior executives, continuing to shape critical operations at the highest level.

From IUP to global leadership, his career reflects a lifetime of service and excellence.
