When severe storms affected communities across Northwest Indiana, the IU School of Social Work's Community and Belonging Council came together to support colleagues, students, and community members in need.

Thanks to the generosity of IUSSW faculty and staff, donations of toiletries, nonperishable food, cleaning supplies, household essentials, and children's items were collected and are now being distributed to those impacted.

A special thank you to Carly Traynor, Devina Jani, Marshelia Harris, Nicki Williamson, Erin Brock, and Marina Sutrisno for helping organize and coordinate this effort.

We are grateful to everyone who contributed and helped demonstrate the care, compassion, and sense of community that define social work.

One of our favorite ways to kick off a new school year? IU Indy's annual Ice Cream Social. 🍦

Last week, Dean Kalea Benner, Barbara Pierce, students Chris and Jason, and Jazzy joined the IU Indy community to celebrate the first week of classes and connect with students across campus.

We're looking forward to another exciting year of learning, leadership, and community at IU Social Work.

What's one item on Dean Benner's desk that tells students a little about who she is? What social work textbook did she just finish working on?

Beyond the Bio: getting to know the people behind the titles, one conversation at a time.

Social Work Brainiacs have entered the chat. πŸ§ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

An afternoon of history, friendly competition, and team bonding made for a great way to connect with colleagues from across campus. We even crossed paths with Chancellor Latha Ramchand along the way!

The fearless team representing IU School of Social Work at IU Indianapolis' Red, White, and Brainy America 250 trivia event consisted of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Amy Murphy-Nugen, Sr. Director of the BSW Program Katie McCarthy, Interim MSW Program Director Jennifer Hammond, Assistant Director of the MSW Program Carly Traynor, Administrative Assistant Kay Jeeter, and Communications Specialist Micah Horne.

Swipe through for team photos, event highlights, and our final standing. Did the Social Work Brainiacs live up to the name? You'll have to see for yourself. πŸ‘€

Beyond the Bio: because there's more to our faculty than what's listed on their profile pages.

We kicked off the series with Dean Benner. We talked favorite classes, social work origins, and a few things that don't usually make it into a faculty bio.

Catch part two on this Wednesday on all IU Social Work Socials.

A new job led to an unexpected family connection for IU School of Social Work alumna Meghan Martewicz.

After graduating with her Master of Social Work and beginning her role as a clinical therapist at St. Coletta's of Illinois, Meghan learned that her uncle had attended the organization's Kennedy School years earlier. Through archival records, the agency confirmed the connection, linking Meghan's current work supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to a part of her own family's history.

Stories like Meghan's remind us that social work is more than a profession. It's a commitment to helping others that can span generations.

We're proud of the impact Meghan is already making and grateful to see IU School of Social Work graduates serving communities with compassion, empathy, and purpose. Read more: go.iu.edu/aT7asi

Christopher Bontrager is combining practice experience with a passion for research as he pursues a PhD at the IU School of Social Work.

His long-term goal is to teach future social workers while conducting research focused on trauma and PTSD in veterans. Through both research and education, Christopher hopes to advance our understanding of trauma and help strengthen the services and supports available to individuals, families, and communities.

We're proud to support doctoral students whose work is helping shape the future of social work practice, research, and education.
