Congrats to Past Supreme Prior Larry Leib (Mu Chi, '87) on being installed as Imperial Potentate of International, where he will serve as its president and chief executive officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shriners Children's. Shriners is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth with chapters and clubs on six continents, and a global membership of 1.7 million.

Leonard “Lenny” Dave (Mu Psi, ‘76), Past Supreme Recorder and former member of the SAM staff, has entered Chapter Eternal.

Years ago, as Editor of The Octagonian, Lenny put into words what so many of us feel but rarely say. He closed his essay "I am a Sammy" like this:

No, I don’t think about my fraternity every day. But, my life would be so different had I not joined Sigma Alpha Mu as a young man in college.

This is the Sigma Alpha Mu experience. It lasts. I am a Sammy.

As Jewish American Heritage Month comes to a close, we reflect on moments in Sigma Alpha Mu history that demonstrated leadership, compassion, and a commitment to helping others in times of crisis.

In 1935, Sigma Alpha Mu officially adopted the Refugee Project, an initiative that helped Jewish students fleeing persecution in Europe continue their education in the United States. Through the support of chapters and alumni, refugees were provided housing, financial assistance, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives during one of history’s darkest periods.

Over the course of the project, dozens of refugee students were supported by the Fraternity, with many going on to distinguished careers in education, science, public service, and industry.

The Refugee Project remains an important reminder of Sigma Alpha Mu’s longstanding commitment to service, humanity, and the responsibility to stand up for others.
