Congratulations to Sean Smith, aka Oreo Jones, winner of the 2026 IU Indianapolis Department of Communication “BA Program Outstanding Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award,” for being featured in this month’s cover story of PATTERN Magazine. Sean is being celebrated for his work in founding and stewarding the growth of the annual “Chreece” hip-hop festival, which since its founding in 2016 has expanded beyond its annual takeover of Fountain Square into artist workshops, cultural programming and music curation for major Indianapolis events. Keep raising the bar, Sean! We are incredibly proud of you and all of our department graduates. 👏

Hope a terrific Fall Break for each of you so far! We very much look forward to seeing everyone back on campus tomorrow.

As you look ahead to next week, please consider playing a role in the success of Media Literacy Week 2026, an annual highlight hosted by various IU campuses across the state, including our own. The week includes a number of interesting and vital sessions, some in person and others accessible via Zoom, which are all included (with locations, times and Zoom links) here: https://columbus.iu.edu/events/media-literacy-week/index.html

Also, the week will conclude on the IU Indianapolis campus with a screening of the new documentary “Your Attention Please — Reclaiming Humanity in the Digital Age” on Thursday, 10/29 in Lecture Hall Room 101 starting at 6:30 pm, immediately followed with a Zoom discussion with the filmmakers. Congratulations to Department of Communication at IU Indianapolis alumna Emily Mellentine for being celebrated by Mirror Indy for her work founding "From Her Corner," an organization now based in The Stutz Building that creates a third space for co-writing sessions and more. “My overall goal, with everything I do," says Mellentine, "is just to create experiences that people can use to play and explore parts of themselves.”

This Wed, Oct 14, IU Indianapolis Department of Communication family! The return of one of our favorite traditions, “Second Wednesday Coffee and Communication Connections,” from 12-2 in the 3rd Floor Lobby of Cavanaugh Hall. As always, we will have free, delicious coffee and treats, but the real joy lies in getting the chance to make new friends and to network with faculty, alumni and fellow change-agent students who share similar interests. Plus, the leaders of TCN and Jag Media will be hosting their next Open Meeting there too, starting at 12:15. This is an excellent opportunity to make your mark! We hope to see you this Wednesday.
