WVSU Student Veterans of America Welcome to the West Virginia State University chapter of Student Veterans of America!

We are a local branch of the Student Veterans of America whose mission is "To provide military veterans with the resources, support, and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and following graduation." SVA’s mission is to provide military veterans with the resources, support and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and after graduation. The organization was born from the experiences of young veterans transitioning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to college campuses across the nation. What they encountered were unprepared school environments void of peers with shared experiences. Not only are student veterans typically older than “traditional” students, but they have radically different life experiences. Quite simply, student
veterans often felt like outsiders on campus, which exacerbated the challenges of transitioning to life as a civilian and as a student. SVA’s objectives:
• Connect members with on-campus resources needed for college success.
• Support members as they transition from the military to civilian life.
• Generate awareness of veterans on campus.
• Create and promote camaraderie.
• Serve as a voice for student service members and veterans on campus. Constitution:

The Code Talkers

Today, we honor the legacy of the Navajo Code Talkers, whose courage, resilience, and native language forever changed the course of history.

During World War II, the Marine Corps turned to a method of communication that Japanese intelligence could never crack: the Navajo language.

In 1942, a group of Navajo Marines developed an unbreakable oral code that allowed for fast and secure communication during battles throughout the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Because of the code's strategic value, their heroic contributions remained secret until 1968.

Semper Fidelis.

Want to get paid to do research at WVSU?

Applications are open for the Research Rookies program! Students work with a faculty mentor on hands-on research for approximately 10 hours per week, scheduled around their classes, and receive a $2,000 stipend each semester ($4,000 per year).

And don't let the word research intimidate you...you do NOT need any previous research experience! We really do mean ROOKIES. One of the primary goals of the program is to give students the opportunity to get started in research while receiving guidance from a faculty mentor.

Research Rookies can also gain:
🔬 Hands-on research experience
🎓 Graduate school and career preparation
🤝 Opportunities to network with professors and professionals
✈️ Possible travel opportunities
🧪 Opportunities to collaborate on multi-lab and multi-institution research projects
📊 Experience presenting research at the annual WVSU Research Symposium

The program is currently geared primarily toward freshmen and sophomores in STEM majors who are enrolled full-time at WVSU, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Don't meet all of those requirements? I still encourage you to apply! We are hoping to expand Research Rookies to include more students and additional disciplines in the future. Demonstrating interest from students who fall outside our current eligibility requirements can help us make the case for expanding the program.
