Big changes are happening across our campus facilities 🚧

Graduate College Building: Renovations to the former Art Building are nearing completion, with the building expected to open in spring 2027.

Tippie College of Business: A groundbreaking event is happening Sept. 18 for the expansion and modernization project, which will add new space to the facility and renovate Gilmore Hall.

Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories: Construction continues on a new four-story addition and renovations throughout the building.

Quad Green: New recreation and gathering spaces, including sport courts, a pavilion, and landscaping, are expected to be completed this fall.

Iowa Memorial Union: Phase two project renovations are beginning this fall with updates to student spaces, dining areas, meeting spaces, and a new student health and wellness center.

Dance Building: The building reached substantial completion this summer and will welcome students for classes this fall.

Health Sciences Academic Building: The new building is ready for students, bringing together three health science programs with new learning, research, and clinical spaces.

FM staff gathered at Gibson Square Park on Aug. 20 for our annual Staff Appreciation Picnic. Thanks to everyone who joined us for good food, fun, and time together. We appreciate all that you do for the University of Iowa!

Summer in bloom 🌸🌳🌼🤩

Some of the best that summer has to offer was on display at last week’s Big 10 Landscape Manager’s Conference. From the College of Pharmacy’s Roots of Medicine Garden to state champion trees our Landscape Services is dedicated to taking care of a campus that is both educational and beautiful.

Rain or shine, the 2026 Big Ten & Friends Landscape Managers Conference was one to remember! ☔️🌳☀️

On June 17-18, we welcomed landscape professionals from 17 universities to Iowa City to share ideas, explore campus, and build new connections. From braving the rain on our east campus tour to enjoying sunshine on the west side, attendees experienced the landscapes that make the University of Iowa unique.

Some of our favorite moments included stepping onto the field at Kinnick Stadium and shaking hands with Herky, exploring campus gardens and state champion trees, and learning from our incredible sponsors and presenters.

We loved hosting our fellow landscape friends in Iowa City and hope to see everyone again soon! 💛🖤

Before the new NCAA Elite Eight court could be installed, Facilities Management crews helped prepare the space by scrubbing and cleaning the concrete surface after the previous court was removed section by section.

The University of Iowa recently purchased the official court used in the NCAA Houston Regional Elite Eight, bringing a piece of March basketball history to Iowa City and replacing the current court that has been in Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 2016.

Earth Month may be over, but tree care never stops 😤

Our tree crew is dedicated to taking care of our trees all year long, and three years ago completed an incredible feat: relocating a 6-ton state champion tree over a quarter of a mile.

It was a lucky twist of fate that saved the Blackhaw viburnum when South Quadrangle was slated to be removed in 2023 to make room for the new Health Sciences Academic Building. The tree team feared that the tree may be too big to transport.

But a chance meeting with a large tree specialist changed the tree's fate. A Boston-area large tree specialist happened to be in town relocating other big trees. After confirming that the trees were viable for transport, the specialist taught our tree crew how to ball and burlap trees of that size. With the rental of a large loader capable of lifting the tree's estimated weight of 12,000-14,000 pounds, the tree was off to its new home near the Boyd Law Building.

The tree was successfully transplanted and just celebrated its third year in its new home.
