Iowa Engineering students visited Shive-Hattery Architecture + Engineering in Iowa City as part of our ongoing Career Trek program.

Students toured the firm, learned about its operations and projects, explored the technologies shaping the industry, asked questions, and connected with professionals working in the field.

What happens when a high school student gets the opportunity to dive into real engineering research? 🔬

This summer, Jayden Leung participated in the University of Iowa’s Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP), working alongside Professor Fatima Toor in the Toor Lab.

Jayden and his teammates designed and built a solar thermophotovoltaic system—a technology that captures both light and heat energy. Along the way, they 3D-printed components, reviewed research literature, and simulated the efficiency of their system.

Beyond the technical experience, Jayden found a community at Iowa that helped shape his future interests in photonics, electrical engineering, and renewable energy.
