University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts

University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts Welcome to the official page for the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts. New work and collaboration are the hallmarks of our department.

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts is one of the oldest and most respected theatre programs in the country. We offer students the opportunity to earn an undergraduate BA degree, or an MFA degree with an emphasis in acting, directing, design, playwriting, dramaturgy, or stage management. For more than 100 years we have supported the development of new plays by students, faculty, and

distinguished guests. We recognize that every play, whether new or old, is brought to life through the complex collaborative effort of a writer, director, dramaturg, designers, actors, stage managers, and technicians. In order to support this process, we seek to create an atmosphere of passion for the art and generosity of spirit. The Department of Theatre Arts is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Along with its professional wing, the Iowa Summer Rep, it is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association (U/RTA). https://linktr.ee/uiowatheatre

Last year, the Stanley Center’s Global Education Program and the Muscatine Art Center commissioned Iowa Playwrights Workshop student Cianon Jones to write a play about Alexander Clark. Following a successful staged reading last spring and with the support of additional sponsors, the full play—titled Barberman: The Alexander Clark Story—is premiering in June!

Featuring a full set, lighting, and costumes designed by University of Iowa theatre graduate students, the production will showcase eight actors telling Clark’s story. The play, directed by Michael C. Flores, will be performed June 12–14, 2026, at Muscatine Community College.

Reserve your ticket and learn more about the play at the link in the comments below. This is a free event with a suggested donation.
