University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts Welcome to the official page for the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts. New work and collaboration are the hallmarks of our department.

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts is one of the oldest and most respected theatre programs in the country. We offer students the opportunity to earn an undergraduate BA degree, or an MFA degree with an emphasis in acting, directing, design, playwriting, dramaturgy, or stage management. For more than 100 years we have supported the development of new plays by students, faculty, and distinguished guests. We recognize that every play, whether new or old, is brought to life through the complex collaborative effort of a writer, director, dramaturg, designers, actors, stage managers, and technicians. In order to support this process, we seek to create an atmosphere of passion for the art and generosity of spirit. The Department of Theatre Arts is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Opening night of We Proudly Present... is tonight!

At Lincoln Elementary School, five students and two teachers have been rehearsing a production of Little Red Riding Hood. Today is the big day: show day! Will it go exactly as they all planned? Probably not. But that’s the fun of it, right? 🎭

Join us at 8:00 p.m. tonight at Alan MacVey Theatre in the Theatre Building to witness this production! Tickets for workshops and galleries are free of charge; however, you must obtain a ticket at the door and seating is limited.

refocusfilmfest has begun—and our faculty are taking part!

This Sunday, “From Chaucer to Saucer” celebrates the 25th anniversary of G-Spots?, a 2001 short film adaptation of Chaucer’s “The Wife of Bath’s Tale,” co-written by Theatre/Dance Associate Professor Daniel Fine Daniel Fine (director) and Carla Stockton (producer). This irreverent deconstruction stars Keith David and Sandy Duncan as monarchs who send an errant Knight on a quest to discover what women truly want.

Theatre Assistant Professor Caroline Clay Caroline Clay will read an excerpt from Chaucer’s original; a 35mm screening of G-Spots? follows. Local artists Eli Rodriguez Fielder and Clay Scofield present Tea Spots, a 2026 adaptation which considers how repair happens, if even possible. Caroline Clay will moderate a Q&A on how stories and meaning change through time and adaptation.

Playwrights Workshop Alums are making magic happen with the help of Theatre Arts graduates! 🎶🌟

Jeremy Geragotelis ('22) and Stephen Glavey ('21) created and recorded a rock opera for Iowa New Play Festival in 2021. Rising against challenges provided by the pandemic, they created a piece that was a testament to our creative campus.

Since the premiere of Doctor VYSARIUS, the two have rerecorded the piece with the help of fellow alums from the Department of and created a website to share their work. Check it out in the comments below to see what all is possible here with the University of Iowa theatre department!

Theatre grad Nickolas Rhodes (87BA), a prolific entrepreneur in the entertainment industry, recently became the founding CEO of Field and Stream TV. Based in California, he still makes time to return often to Iowa City.

“The University of Iowa is our happy place,” he said.
