Emiliano Miranda had never been to the East Coast. In August, he landed in Charlotte, N.C., for his first ALPFA National Convention.

Emiliano, MPAc '27, was one of the ALPFA UC Irvine students who made the trip with support from the Latinx Initiative (LXi) at UC Irvine's Paul Merage School of Business. ALPFA, the Association of Latino Professionals For America, is the first national Latino professional association in the United States.

Conversations with professionals at Crowe and EY opened his eyes to forensic accounting and anti-money laundering. The bigger lesson was about people.

"The convention showed me that there is a large community of professionals and students who are willing to share their experiences and support each other."

Now on the chapter's executive board, he is focused on helping the next class of students step outside their comfort zones. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the students building that community.

What do warehouses have to do with reducing truck pollution in Southern California?

Luyi Gui, associate professor of operations and decision technologies at the UCI Paul Merage School of Business, is studying how targeting warehouses could help reduce emissions from the diesel trucks moving goods throughout the region.

Her research examines the connection between warehouses, truck traffic, air pollution and surrounding communities, and what policies like Southern California’s Warehouse Indirect Source Rule could mean for the future of cleaner transportation.
