On 12/2 @ 2PM join the Forum for the Academy and the Public for “Using Fiction to Shed Light on the PRC: A China Book Slam Event,” an illuminating discussion of how literary fiction can both reflect on China’s complex past and comment on its present.

Orville Schell, author of My Old Home: A Novel of Exile by Orville Schell and Qiu Xiaolong, author of Inspector Chen and the Private Kitchen Murder, will discuss their latest works.

Lijia Zhang, writer and journalist, Sigrid Schmalzer, Professor of History at UMass Amherst, and Adam Brookes, journalist and author, each of whom has written at least one work of fiction, will offer commentary. Jeffrey Wasserstrom, Chancellor’s Professor of History and Co-Founder of The Forum for the Academy and the Public, will moderate.

This will be a hybrid live event taking place at UC Irvine in Humanities Gateway 1030 and, via streaming, everywhere else.
