🌿📍 Chitwan, Nepal

Adriana Urrutia’s first site visit is in a region where biodiversity and public health intersect. As an endemic area for dengue since 2004, Chitwan offers key insights into how environmental and social factors shape disease risk.

Through interviews, community workshops, and meetings with local experts, Adriana is capturing how dengue prevention efforts take shape on the ground.

From tuk tuks to in-person interviews, this is what global health research looks like in action.

✈️🌍 From preparation to takeoff — Adriana Urrutia’s global health journey begins.

Adriana, a Ph.D. in Public Health candidate (Global Health concentration) at Wen Public Health, is studying how water-related environmental and social factors shape the spread of diseases such as dengue in regions like the Andes and the Himalayas. Over the next few weeks, she’ll be sharing her experience on the ground in Nepal — where research meets real-world impact.

STEP #1: Before heading to Nepal, Adriana took an important public health preventative measure: Made sure her vaccines were up to date.

STEP #2: Stop in Kathmandu on a layover and visited Patan, a heritage site.

Follow along as we document her journey from Irvine to Nepal and beyond. 🌏

Expanding access = measurable impact. 📊

A new study from Wen Public Health shows California’s Medi-Cal expansion for young adults (19–25), regardless of immigration status, led to real gains in coverage — without reducing private insurance.

🔍 What the data shows:
✨ +4.2% Medi-Cal enrollment
✨ +3.5% overall coverage
✨ Strongest gains among Hispanic young adults

Drawing on national survey data and rigorous comparisons across states, the research adds important evidence to ongoing policy conversations on health equity.

As corresponding author Brandy Lipton, PhD, notes, funding constraints and policy changes could shape what comes next — making this evidence more important than ever. Access to care remains a critical issue. Studies like this help show what’s possible.

🧠 American Stroke Awareness Month | Expert Take

Stroke is a leading cause of death and long‑term disability — but many strokes are preventable ✅

At Wen Public Health, experts Bernadette Boden‑Albala and Simin Liu study how 🫀 modifiable risk factors, 🌍 social conditions, and ⚖️ structural inequities shape stroke risk across communities.

💬 “Community‑based research is essential to addressing stroke disparities and improving prevention across diverse populations.”
— Bernadette Boden‑Albala, MPH, DrPH

🚀 What does space travel mean for women’s reproductive health?

A NASA-funded study found that exposure to space radiation may pose serious risks for women on long-duration missions.

Led by Ulrike Luderer, MD, PhD, the research shows that cosmic radiation can:
• Damage ovarian follicles,
• Trigger early loss of reproductive function, &
• Increase long-term health risks in animal models.
As more women prepare for future missions — possibly even to Mars — understanding these sex-specific health effects is essential for the future of human space exploration.

🌌 Space science isn’t just about going farther — it’s about protecting everyone who goes.
