Understanding global environmental issues such as global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion and worldwide air pollution requires the cooperation of scientists across many disciplines. Global change is projected to accelerate through the 21st century and will impact the ecosystems that preserve the habitability of the planet. The Department of Earth System Science (ESS) focuses on the atmospher

e, land and oceans, how these interact as a system, and how the Earth will change over a human lifetime. Founded in 1991, the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine, provides quality education, along with research and teaching opportunities for students interested in the science of the Earth as a system. ESS faculty, researchers and students conduct research in many areas, including atmospheric chemistry, biogeochemical cycles, and climate change. In the education program ranked highly by the National Research Council, the department provides opportunities for students to learn from and work with recognized experts in the field. ESS has earned a reputation as one of the most influential academic departments in the nation devoted to studying the Earth as a system.

Join us celebrating the arrival of a Mini Carbon Dating System (MICADAS) at UCI’s School of Physical Sciences KCCAMS facility. The MICADAS is a 0.2 MV accelerator mass spectrometer for measuring radiocarbon that was added to the facility to support climate change and air quality research, with funding from the National Science Foundation and UCI’s School of Physical Sciences and Office of Research. Meet the MICADAS proposal team from UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and NASA-JPL in the Croul lobby at 3 pm for a short celebration. Then see the MICADAS in action in Croul 2313 and learn about the latest radiocarbon-enabled science during a poster session on the 2nd floor of Croul Hall afterwards.

2025 Fall ESS 51 Field Trip Recap

Last week, students in ESS 51: Land Interactions embarked on an unforgettable field trip to San Jacinto, California. Throughout the day, they explored the region’s diverse ecosystems, learned to identify various vegetation species, and delved into wildfire mapping across California. The experience provided invaluable insights into the critical role terrestrial processes play in the Earth system.

Professor Brett Walker joins the Department of at UC Irvine this year. Walker’s research group is interested in the marine carbon cycle and biogeochemistry. Their research aims to deepen our understanding of the marine carbon cycle, which moderates the climate on modern to millennial timescales, and to explore how this knowledge can inform predictions of future climate scenarios. Welcome Back, Professor Brett Walker!
