Congratulations to UCI Psychology Post-Bacc alum ('25) Michael Abad, who recently got interviews for the M.D. program at UC San Francisco and the D.O. program at California Health Sciences University and who was admitted to the D.O. program at the Valley College of Osteopathic Medicine! He will wait to hear back from the results of his interviews (and his other applications) before making a decision, but the Valley College of Osteopathic Medicine is an excellent option.

A little bit about Michael: Michael graduated from the University of the Pacific with a B.S. in Biological Sciences; after graduating, he became interested in mental health. The following year, he worked as a Behavior Interventionist and took classes at Santa Monica College and Cal State Dominguez Hills. During his time in the post-bacc program, Michael worked in Dr. Lukowski's Infants, Children, and Families (INCHES) Lab and in Dr. Young’s Institute for Prediction Technology (IPT) Lab, resulting in poster presentations at the 2025 Western Psychological Science conference and the 2025 UC Irvine Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program conference. In addition, he completed courses in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Advanced Research Methods, Clinical Neuroscience, Clinical Health Psychology, the Science & Practice of Wellness & Resilience, Motivation, and Applied Statistics. Outside of UCI, he interned for the Clinical team at FundaMental Health, a non-profit organization in the mental health space. After completing our program, Michael studied for the MCAT exam while also continuing his work at FundaMental Health (now as a part-time, paid Associate Clinical Director) and continuing to volunteer in the IPT lab. In Summer 2026, he also began volunteering in Dr. Derek Novacek's lab in the UCI Dept. of Psychiatry & Human Behavior.

So proud of you, Michael - and I can't wait to see where you end up!

💼✨ What if your dream job doesn't actually have to be your dream?

We've all heard the advice to find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life. But psychology research suggests that putting too much pressure on ourselves to find the perfect career can actually contribute to burnout, unrealistic expectations, and even a loss of identity when our interests or circumstances change.

A new article in The Conversation explores why career satisfaction might be less about finding that one perfect job and more about developing transferable skills, finding supportive mentors, and building a life that includes meaningful relationships, hobbies, and experiences outside of work.

So, if you're still figuring out what you want to do with your psychology degree, here's something to consider: Your career can be an important part of your life without defining who you are! 💙

GRAD PROGRAM! The Social, Developmental, and Health Psychology (SDH) doctoral program at the University of Georgia provides interdisciplinary training for students interested in understanding how individuals and their social environments shape behavior, development, and health across the lifespan. The program emphasizes rigorous, context-sensitive science and offers opportunities to study a range of topics, which you can read more about here: https://psychology.uga.edu/sdh . The following faculty will be considering students for admission to the program for Fall 2027:

Dr. Drew Abney, director of the Developmental Dynamics Lab ( https://devdynlab.com ), seeks students interested in sensorimotor development, emotion regulation, and infant sleep physiology. Ongoing work examines (1) the dynamics of infant movements during sleep and the development of motor abilities, (2) the temporal structure of human behavior throughout development, and (3) how child-parent interactions impact the development of emotion regulation. Studies use behavioral experiments, motion capture, eye-tracking, computational models, novel sensor technologies, peripheral physiological measurements, and fNIRS-based hyperscanning.

Dr. Katie Ehrlich, director of the Health and Development Lab ( https://www.healthanddevelopmentlaboratory.com/ ), seeks students interested in understanding how close relationships and stressful experiences shape mental and physical health across development. The lab’s research includes a substantive focus on children and adolescents, examining how family relationships can promote resilience or amplify risk in the context of adversity. Current projects investigate the developmental timing and lasting effects of supportive caregiving relationships, as well as the pathways linking social experiences to inflammation and cardiometabolic health. Ongoing data collection is focused on how children’s stress across middle and high school transitions is associated with parents’ physical health.

Dr. Jessica Flannery, director of the Brain & Behavior Dynamics (BBD) Lab ( https://brainbehaviordynamicslab.com/ ), seeks students interested in cognitive neuroscience, addiction, substance use, and brain development. The BBD lab investigates the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying substance use and other motivated health behaviors across adolescence and adulthood. Current areas of focus include ni****ne dependence, withdrawal, and electronic cigarette use; neural processing of internal bodily signals and the role of interoception in addiction; neurodevelopmental changes in MRI-based biomarkers of brain structure and function; and data-driven methods for analyzing intensive longitudinal data and neuroimaging consortium datasets (see https://psychology.uga.edu/directory/people/jessica-s-flannery ).

Dr. Janet Frick, director of the Infant Attention Lab ( https://infantlab.uga.edu/ ), seeks students interested in visual attention, infant and toddler play and motor development, and parent-child social engagement. Ongoing and future projects examine infant and toddler visual attention, the effects of early motor experience on emerging visual and motor exploration, and the bidirectional influence of parent and child engagement on play and social interaction. We welcome applications from any students interested in exploring early attention, cognition, motor development, and parent-child social engagement.

Dr. Dylan K. Richards, director of the Health Motivation Lab, seeks students interested in motivation and health behavior change. Grounded in self-determination theory, the lab studies health behavior change, including alcohol and cannabis use, physical activity, and diet, and its implications for chronic disease risk. Ongoing research examines natural opportunities for change, such as Dry January and New Year’s resolutions, and how people change multiple health behaviors at the same time. Methods include intensive longitudinal survey designs, health interventions, and research synthesis.

Dr. Allison Skinner, director of the Georgia Attitude, Bias, and Behavior Acquisition (GABBA) Lab ( https://allisonlskinner.wixsite.com/socialcognition ), is recruiting new Ph.D. students interested in studying the factors that perpetuate and reinforce prejudice and systemic oppression (and what we can do to challenge it). We are particularly interested in students who will bring their own innovative ideas and perspectives on the factors that perpetuate systemic inequalities and how we can test these empirically.

PARENTS OF INFANTS WANTED! The UCI Health, Relationships, & Interventions (THRIVE) Lab is currently recruiting participants for a new study examining relational savoring (RS) as a brief psychological support intervention for parents of infants hospitalized after birth. Previously, this lab has tested RS in a post-NICU context and found really promising results. Now, they have adapted a special, trauma-informed version for the hospitalization period and the immediate aftermath. This will be a brief, online, single-session randomized controlled trial (RCT) study.

This lab is recruiting parents whose infants are currently hospitalized in an ICU (e.g., NICU, PICU, CTICU) following birth, as well as parents whose infants have been discharged home within the past month. Participation takes approximately one hour, is completed entirely online, and involves completing questionnaires and a brief reflection task. Participants receive a $40 Amazon gift card as compensation. See the attached flyer for more info.
