๐Ÿš˜ ๐Ÿ”‹ ๐Ÿก UC Irvine engineers are on a quest to make vehicle-to-home charging an ordinary part of life. V2H allows people to draw power from the battery in their car to run lights, air conditioning and appliances in their homes. It can come in handy during power outages and in the evenings when utilities charge a higher price for electricity.

When experiencing painful stomach problems, Megan Yoo Schneider โ€™12, M.S. โ€™14 kept searching for answers. As her symptoms worsened, she sought a second opinion at UCI Health, where gynecologic oncologist Dr. Robert E. Bristow diagnosed her with stage I ovarian cancer. Surgery and a full recovery followed, and now Schneider champions research that could help save others.

โ€œI know I wouldnโ€™t be here today if it wasnโ€™t for Dr. Bristow,โ€ she says.

She encourages other women to trust their instincts and speak up when something doesnโ€™t feel right. Symptoms can include pelvic pressure or fullness, abdominal bloating, rapid weight gain and changes in bowel or bladder habits. If you have a family history of ovarian cancer, talk with your doctor about your risk.

On Oct. 10, sheโ€™ll join the UCI community at the UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge to help support cancer research. Her story is a reminder to know the signs, advocate for your health and keep pushing for better possibilities for every patient.

Extreme heat doesnโ€™t affect every Californian the same way โ€” and social media may help reveal who is struggling most.

UC Irvine researchers analyzed nearly 25,000 heat-related social media posts to understand how Californians experience and cope with extreme heat. They found that people living in RVs, vans or boats appeared to face greater challenges during extreme heat while being less likely to discuss ways of coping with it.

โ€œSocial media gives us another window into how people are experiencing heat in their daily lives,โ€ says senior author Suellen Hopfer of the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health.

The findings could help public health officials develop more targeted heat warnings, outreach and prevention strategies for vulnerable communities.

๐Ÿ ๐ŸŽ“ Student success starts at home. At UC Irvine, that means living on campus.

UC Irvine is preparing to break ground on East Campus Student Apartments Phase 5, approximately 1,065 beds by fall 2028. With campus apartments nearly fully occupied, the new community will expand access to on-campus housing, with projected rents about 34% below comparable market rates. That means more students will have the opportunity to remain on campus, closer to classes, resources, and the community that supports their success.

๐Ÿšฒ๐ŸšŒ๐ŸŒฑUC Irvine moves differently.

Since 2016, enrollment has grown 14%, while solo student commuting has dropped by about 47%.
Today, 83% of the UC Irvine community uses some form of sustainable transportation, whether walking, biking, taking public transit, carpooling, telecommuting or driving a zero-emission vehicle.
That progress is the result of years of thoughtful planning around one important question: How do you create more opportunity without creating more traffic? As UC Irvine plans for the future, sustainable transportation is helping create more opportunity while keeping people and the region moving.
