In this funny, uplifting tale based on an actual lie, Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi (Awkwafina) reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai, has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself. The Farewell writer/director Lulu Wang has created a richly moving story of how family can unite and strengthen us, often in spite of ourselves.

Jumay Chu’s dancers work with the cross-cultural significance of transforming into movement the modern art of Taiwan’s famous calligrapher Tong Yang-Tze; Nic Ceynowa’s choreography transfigures with music the façade of organized “belonging” with its illusions and deceptions; and Byron Suber’s dancers transpose the scenic design of AAP alum Matt Gagnon ‘96 and the cyclical processes of the metaphorical transformation through darkness into light. Tickets will be placed in your mailbox, and attendance will be tracked by blog post. Sign-up required!

Plants can communicate with each other and with other organisms that interact with them. Most of these interactions are mediated by chemical information. Tapping into and manipulating this chemical information transfer presents itself as a sustainable way of controlling pests in agriculture. I will discuss recent findings on plant communication and link them to new and exciting technologies to control pests in agriculture. The discussion will include the most successful examples of applied chemical and community ecology from Kenya and Colombia and the political barriers that prevent a broader adoption of these technologies worldwide. Some insect snack samples will be served. Sign-up required!

Plastics such as polyethylene and polystyrene are cheap and have outstanding properties, leading to their use in a wide variety of applications ranging from commodity products to high-value fibers and coatings. However, most of these plastics are not recycled primarily due to the cost of separation. This leads to the horrific images of large amounts of single-use plastic materials ending up in landfills. Given the scale of the plastic industry, reducing their burden on the environment requires a multifaceted approach. In this short talk, I will discuss several approaches (via new innovative chemistry and processing) being taken by researchers at the Center for Sustainable Polymers to develop sustainable plastic solutions.
