We are established with a generous gift from the Tata Trust to conduct multidisciplinary research, and to facilitate research grants and fellowships to prominent student and professional researchers at Cornell University, in India, and across the globe. Our research team is based out of Ithaca, New York at Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and in Mumbai at the Tata Institute for Social Sciences (TISS).

Rice-wheat cropping systems are a crucial part of India's food system, but they can harm soil quality, leading to reduced yields. New research from TCI shows that improved management practices like no-till farming and the addition of crop residues and manure can improve soil health and boost crop yields.

This week, TCI Manager for Strategic Initiatives Milorad Plavsic spoke at the Bihar Agri-PV Summit 2026 in Patna. He shared TCI's research on community-based agrivoltaics in the state, which adapts traditional agrivoltaics to smallholder contexts, providing sustainable energy for irrigation and other needs.

Nuthalapati co-edited a new book, “Innovative Agricultural Technologies and the Private Sector for a Hunger-Free World.” The book, which explores the challenges of food production and food security through the lens of innovation in agricultural technologies, was published in honor of retired economic historian Carl Pray.
