In the course of her fieldwork, TCI Scholar Apurva Borar surveyed 801 married, unemployed women in India about their desires to work. She learned that they face a stack of barriers to employment, from household responsibilities to social expectations. Despite the challenges, 97% wanted to work.

Value chains are crucial for making diverse food products accessible and affordable in India. Our researchers spent two months visiting with stakeholders in the value chains for five key crops - maize, black gram, orange, eggplant and soybean - to learn what works well and how they can be improved.

“It is evident from my research that districts endowed with favorable climatic conditions, supplemented by robust irrigation infrastructure, high fertilizer inputs and efficient access to agricultural information through Kisan Call Centers, are exceedingly represented among highly productive agricultural clusters.”
