EEB's David R. Atkinson Professor of Ecology and Environmental Biology, Dr. Bob Howarth will be our next seminar speaker: Monday, October 19, 2016.: 50+ Years on Biological Nitrogen Fixation in the Howarth-Marino Lab.

Bob Howarth is an Earth systems scientist and ecosystem biologist with a BA from Amherst College and a Ph.D. jointly from MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He joined the faculty of Cornell University in 1985 and was appointed the Atkinson Professor of Ecology & Environmental Biology in 1993. Howarth is also an Adjunct Senior Scientist at the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole, MA, and is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research.

Our next seminar will be EEB alum Dr. Jill Anderson from the University of Georgia: “Local adaptation in a rapidly changing climate: Insights from a North American wildflower, Boechera stricta."

"I am an evolutionary ecologist broadly interested in the processes that promote and constrain adaptive evolution in natural plant populations. I received my Sc.B. from Brown University in 1998 and then spent three years in the Neotropics working on various botanical projects before beginning grad school at Cornell. I finished my Ph.D. under the mentorship of Monica Geber and Peter Marks (with lots of help from Alex Flecker along the way!) in 2009 and then started working in montane ecosystems with Boechera stricta for my postdoc with Tom Mitchell-Olds at Duke. After a brief stint as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina, I moved to the University of Georgia where I am now a Professor with a joint appointment in Genetics and the Odum School of Ecology."

From EEB department chair, Christy Goodale: Bob Howarth, EEB's David R. Atkinson Professor of Ecology and Environmental Biology was just announced as one of the 2026 cohort of Fellows of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). This honor recognizes his long and substantial contributions to the biogeosciences, and will be celebrated at the AGU annual meeting in San Francisco this December. Please join me in congratulating Bob on the accomplishment!

Dr. Sarah Batterman from the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies will be our next seminar speaker! Sarah's talk, “Resolving the tropical carbon sink: Symbioses, biogeochemistry and the effects of global change" will take place on Monday, September 28 at
12:10PM in the Morison room (Corson-Mudd A106).

Dr. Sarah Batterman is an ecosystem ecologist and biogeochemist who investigates controls on the carbon cycle and biodiversity under global change. She uses greenhouse and large-scale ecosystem experiments, field observations, and modeling to understand these questions, particularly carbon uptake, nutrient cycling, and plant adaptation in tropical forests.

The teeming diversity of life on planet Earth—our Pale Blue Dot in the universe—is under grave threat from the impact of human activity. But if humans are the main drivers of biodiversity decline today, we also have the power to change the trend. The Cornell community is invited to a Biodiversity Fest in the Mann Library lobby on September 24 to engage with a variety of programs and groups working on the challenge of sustaining biodiversity in the 21st century. Drop by any time between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for a lively introduction to the diverse efforts being made right here at Cornell to better understand and preserve the vibrancy so key to a healthy future for both our planet and the people who live on it. Our next department seminar speaker will be EEB's Dr. Megan Greischar: The Greischar Lab uses data-driven modeling to understand why parasites use such diverse strategies to make a living within the host, with the goal of uncovering evolutionary principles that apply across the tree of life. This talk will focus on (1) how fundamental aspects of the ecology and evolution of pathogenic organisms remain unknown due to bias in which parts of the life cycle can be sampled and (2) how the lab uses models to confront those unknowns and identify the constraints that prevent pathogenic organisms from evolving ever greater capacity to exploit their hosts.

EEB weekly seminar series continues with our very own Dr. Leslie Babonis:

"I am an evolutionary developmental biologist interested in understanding the mechanisms that drive the evolution of animal biodiversity. I am particularly interested in understanding how new traits emerge and tend to ask this question at the level of individual cells. My lab uses functional genomics approaches in marine invertebrates to understand how genes become wired together into regulatory networks to drive the evolution of new cell types."
