Oregon Magistrate Judge Dennis J. Hubel dies after 24 years on the bench

Jeff Serfass passed along the sad news that Denny Hubel, '69 passed away on September 16, 2019. Denny was a distinguished US Magistrate judge for many years in Oregon and Cornell ROTC/Engineering grad. Despite his many medical complications at the time, Denny and his wife made the cross-country trip to Ithaca this past June for the Class of 69 reunion and house visit. The strength of fraternal brotherhood and friendships is strong, and RIP Denny.

Alumni Check-in with brother Mark Venuti – ’77. Third in our series of brothers that took lessons learned from house offices and applied them to their lives. Mark Venuti - “Venoots” - was both Rush Chairman and Worthy Master in the house. After Cornell Mark graduated law school in Washington DC and practiced there. He and his wife wanted to be close to family and returned to his hometown of Geneva NY. He set up a law practice and became fully engaged in local government – he is now into his second term as elected Town Supervisor for Geneva Town (separate from the City of Geneva).

Mark reports that being Rush Chairman was the best training for politics; you manage an unruly group to come to the decision you favor, while having them think they are making their own decisions. On Burley’s recommendation Mark took Parliamentary Procedure and to this day Mark knows how to run a meeting.

Mark is very involved in environmental issues – Finger Lakes water quality specifically as Chairperson of the Seneca Watershed Intermunicipal Organization, and reducing waste and developing renewable energy in upstate NY. Good to hear from Venoots and that many of his life lessons came out of being a house officer.

Continuing the theme of BT alums going on to elected (or appointed) office.

Alumni Check-in with Mark Sandeen, class of 79.
Congratulations to “Dino” for his recent election to the Lexington MA Board of Selectman. That is Mr. Sandeen to you! Mark’s most recent elected office before Lexington Selectman was Social Chairman of ATO, where he recalls with precision that the house went through 22 kegs of Genesee Cream Ale in his one semester term at $20/keg.

Mark spent a successful career developing and owning solar projects in Massachusetts. He brought his solar expertise (and Cornell Electrical Engineering degree) to Lexington town projects as Chair of the Sustainable Lexington Committee. He is currently installing five electric car chargers for the town, which will help keep his two Teslas rolling.

Thanks to Dave Lipkin, Worthy Keeper of the Archives for his period, and see the article from the July 1984 Alumni News giving Dino the award for Most Perilous Trip to reunion that year.

The Man Deciding Facebook’s Fate

Cornell ATO alum Joe Simons '80 is Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission in Washington. He was profiled in the Beta Theta Bulletin Summer 2018 issue. The New York Times today had a full feature on Joe and the challenges of data privacy in the Social Media era.

Joseph J. Simons, the F.T.C. chairman, is a newbie on data privacy policy. But he is overseeing the biggest privacy case in the agency’s history.

It is with profound sadness we mourn the passing of Tim Mulligan, Class of 1987.

Tim was the embodiment of a Tau. Quick with a joke, always there for his friends and family, and full of life and spirit.

Tim fought a long, brave battle against cancer before succumbing to the disease earlier today.

Details on any services will be provided as they become available.

Please share your memories of Tim, so we can remember someone who meant so much to those of us who knew him.

Phil Webster '60 lives in MD and sends his regrets as he'll be in Cuba then. His grandson Liam was back to campus last week to start spring semester of his freshman year. He sent along this shot of the house. Those trees are getting pretty big out front, and Phil mentions that no - we were not an "animal" house in the 1950s...
