Alumni Spotlight: Ryan Gangadin
Employer: Junior Civil Engineer at Village of Scarsdale
Program: Cornell Civil & Environmental Engineering
How do the skills you learned at Cornell best serve you in your role today?
"One of the major skills I learned was how to communicate with a team on projects. In my job, there are internal and external parties that you have to juggle to progress on infrastructure goals. Communicating between everyone is crucial to finding the optimal solution."
Why would you recommend your program to others?
"I would recommend civil engineering for a myriad of reasons. The civil engineering program actually prepared me for the working world. While I took the standard design classes for steel, concrete, and wood, my classes were structured as if I was working in a firm. Class projects simulated working on a team, pulling from published industry standards, communicating with clients, and using computer applications that civil engineers use to deliver infrastructure plans."
Any advice for students who are entering into their next semester?
"It's only natural to start focusing on the finish line. However, don’t get too caught up in the end result, stay grounded in the process that got you here. Time management cannot be overstated, and I strongly encourage students to learn how to use their time wisely. It can make all the difference in helping students grow."
