Next up on our alumni spotlight is Victoria Clark! Victoria graduated from Cornell Law in 2014 and currently works as an enforcement attorney within the Federal Aviation Administration in DC. Prior to this role, Victoria worked on the voter protection team in North Carolina for the Biden Harris campaign, was a criminal defense attorney, and clerked in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Victoria is the current president of the Cornell Black Lawyers Alumni Network. In her own words: “as a Black lawyer, there is nothing more important than having a strong support system, which is why I highly recommend being active in organizations like BLSA and CBLAN. Start as early as possible with these groups, and you’ll find that your life and career are more rewarding.”

We’ve decided to extend our alumni spotlight beyond Black History Month and we’re excited to highlight another incredible Cornell Law alum: Mayor Quinton Lucas!

Quinton Lucas graduated from Cornell Law School in 2009, after which he clerked for Judge Duane Benton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Known affectionately as “Mayor Q” to Kansas Citians, he is the youngest elected Kansas City mayor in more than a generation. Mayor Q has been a member of the University of Kansas Law School faculty since 2012, where he teaches local and state government law. Prior to entering academia, Mayor Q was in private practice focused on commercial disputes and government investigations of financial fraud. Mayor Q’s policy agenda has focused on making Kansas City’s neighborhoods safer, creating more accessible and affordable housing and public transportation, and improving basic services.

For Black History Month we’ll be highlighting some outstanding members of the Cornell Law School community. First up is Fatmata Kabia!

Fatmata graduated from Cornell Law School in 2015 with a JD-ILA (Specialization in International Legal Affairs). During her time in law school she was Articles Editor of the International Law Journal, Vice President of CLSA, and Executive Vice Chancellor of the Moot Court Board. Fatmata currently works at Big Law firm Covington & Burling as an associate, whose practice focuses on internal and government investigations. In 2011, Fatmata co-founded Memunatu Magazine, a 501(c)(3) social enterprise that promotes literacy, leadership, and empowerment of teenage girls in Africa and the diaspora, through print and digital content. The magazine has received raving testimonials and several awards, highlighting the significance of its mission. In her own words: 'What inspires me about Memunatu is that it provides an opportunity for girls to be the writers, readers, and leaders of their own narratives. It acknowledges that each person navigates the world with a unique voice that provides them with stories to tell. When you share these stories, they can benefit the group. That concept of sharing different experiences is something that communities like BLSA celebrate. I've found that hearing the experiences of others in the legal profession has both informed and inspired my own path.

Even in these incredibly challenging times, 1L members of our chapter competed in the Langfan Family Moot Court Competition in the case of Kelly v. City of Paddy.

This case asked whether the Due Process Clause and the United State Supreme Court’s holding in Brady v. Maryland requires the government to disclose exculpatory evidence before entering a plea agreement with a criminal defendant.

Stay tuned for updates and introductions to our new executive board!
