American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program The American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program (AIISP) at Cornell University.

The American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program (AIISP) provides a unique combination of American Indian and Indigenous Studies (AIIS) courses and other educational, social, and cultural opportunities to American Indian students. We recruit applicants from all parts of the United States, Canada, and from across the globe, through regional efforts and national conferences.

It’s been a grounding start to the semester with AIISP and Akwe:kon!

Before classes began, our Indigenous student leaders of and gathered at Camp Arnot for a Student Leadership Retreat—time to reconnect, reflect, and build community. Thank you to our campus partners at and for making this easy and special!

Under a perfect sky mid-week, we then gathered at Akwe:kon for an Opening Fire, with an incredible turnout of 36 students across the evening. Big thanks to and for helping make it a success.

And this past Saturday, faculty, staff, students, and community gathered for our annual Welcome Back Picnic & Convocation. Prof. Jolene Rickard (Skarùręˀ/Tuscarora) offered us good words, as did Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ leaders and community members. And, as usual, our student community showed up in style!

In a moment of ongoing change, August offered reminders of what community looks like and that we have so much to celebrate and be thankful for.

Join us in celebrating Dr. Aspen K.B. Omapang (Descendent of Filipino Kamaʻāina, Hawai’i Island)! Aspen has graduated with a PhD in Information Science, with a concentration in Social Aspects of Information and a minor in Science and Technology Studies! Post-grad, Aspen will begin her role as an Incoming Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice in the Information Science Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She also holds a community role as the Director of Information and Data Strategy at Hoʻāla Kealakekua Nui, a lineal-descendent-led non-profit in Kapalilua (South Kona, Hawai’i Island). Join us in celebrating Manuel Cortes Romero (Honduran Lenca)! Manuel has graduated with a major in Animal science, a concentration in Applied Animal Biology, and a minor in Infectious Disease! Post-graduation, Manuel will be a graduate student in the Master of Laboratory Animal Science degree program at Stanford University in the Department of Comparative Medicine.
