This is my first of many updates on preparations for this “Around the Americas” trip which, I am planning, to begin in about a year (May/June-ish 2022). Plans are to head south first. I may or may not include Cuba in this trip – if so, I will be traveling there and back once I hit South Florida. After that, I will be following southern US into Mexico (taking various inroad trips), and following the east coast of Mexico/Belize/Honduras/Equator to Panama. From there, I will be taking a 3 or 4 day ferry trip from southern Panama to Columbia to get around the Darien Gap. At that point, travel the east coast of South America (taking a few travels inland), avoiding Venezuela and Paraguay along the way. Fortunately, most of the North and South American countries I will be traveling through do not require visas. I will be hitting southern Chile (Cape Froward or there-about) before heading north along the western coast of South America back to Columbia (through 11 countries in all) – where I will take the ferry back to southern Panama. From that point, I will travel up the west coast of Central and North America as far as I can go (Alaska?) … then across northern North America … which will probably be somewhere across the southern provinces of Canada (I don’t envision a northern route across the Yukon and Northwest territories) …. Before heading south when I hit the Atlantic Ocean (Which will be somewhere in Newfoundland, Canada) before heading south along the east coast back to Virginia (Traveling through a total of eight countries). In the meantime, I have to decide if my present vehicle (Ford Escape) will make the trip or if I have to seriously consider another vehicle. I also have to get the South America maps for my Garmin GPS and take a good look at my equipment and decide if one camera body will be enough. And, of course, start working on my Spanish. And, of course, build a list of what else I will have to bring with me. Then there are the decisions as to where I will be staying … I will be buying the car-bed for my back seat and getting a list of hostels along the way. A lot of decisions. Please consider contributing. Any amount would be greatly appreciated.
