Precollege summer programs wrapped up earlier this month in Ithaca. Congratulations to all students on a great summer!Pictured here are the final reviews from Introduction to Architecture: Design Studio, led by AAP faculty David Costanza and Lawson Spencer. This six-week course introduces students to ideas, principles, and methods of solving architectural problems in a studio setting. Through a graduated sequence of exercises culminating in a major semester project, students explore the architectural concepts of space, form, function, and technology.

“Freedom to love, to think, and to live without fear.”

These were among the first reflections shared by visitors to Let Freedom Ring, an interactive installation by Paul Ramírez Jonas, artist and chair of Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning Department of Art, on view at Philadelphia’s Cherry Street Pier.

Created as part of the city’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the work invites participants to complete the final note of “America (My Country, ’Tis of Thee)” by ringing a 600‑pound bronze bell—prompting reflection on what they seek to be free to do, and free from.

After Camp Owahta’s arts and crafts building burned down last year, Kelly Guy, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension Cortland County, saw an opportunity to do something different with the camp, but she needed ideas.

Now she’s getting dozens of them – from students in the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning’s B.Arch Engaged Practices Design Studio course, who spent a semester getting to know the camp, its uses, and its potential.

After Camp Owahta’s arts and crafts building burned down last year, Kelly Guy, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension Cortland County, saw an opportunity to do something different with the camp, but she needed ideas.
Now she’s getting dozens of them from students in the B.Arch. Engaged Practices Design Studio course, who spent a semester getting to know the camp, its uses, and its potential. Architecture faculty Hanna Tulis, Sean Anderson, Val Warke, Stefana Kuzmova, Margaret Kirk, and Emma Silverblatt helped guide the students' projects.
