New England saw the most changes this week, with conditions deteriorating in northern Maine and northern New Hampshire due to lack of precipitation, low streamflows, and record-low groundwater. Maine now has 41% of the state in severe drought. Recent rains allowed moderate drought to be reduced in southern New Hampshire and southern Maryland.

This September was record wet for Islip, NY, and among the 20 wettest for an additional 10 major sites. However, Caribou, ME, had its fifth-driest September. Temperatures were cooler than normal in New England but warmer than normal for much of the rest of the Northeast.

Conditions continued to improve in the Mid-Atlantic, New York’s Long Island, and southern New England this week. New Jersey became free of drought for the first time since August 2025. Massachusetts and West Virginia reached their lowest coverage of drought since August 2025, while Maryland reached its lowest coverage of drought since October 2025. However, abnormal dryness expanded in Vermont and parts of western, central, and northern New York.

Conditions deteriorated again this week in Maine, where extreme drought was introduced and severe and moderate drought grew in coverage.

A grower in Maine reported a 30% reduction in their pumpkin crop due to dry conditions.

Huntington and Beckley, WV, had their warmest September 1-15 period on record, with many parts of the Northeast being warmer than normal.
