At a January 2026 ceremony at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Stephan J. Stranick was honored and his portrait was hung in the honorary portrait gallery for distinguished NIST scientists. Steve was a 1989 graduate of Ithaca College with a B.S. in Chemistry and received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University, in 1994. He was also a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He had an award-filled graduate school career and an impressive career at NIST until his untimely death. He received numerous prestigious awards during his scientific career, including the Nobel Laureate Signature Award and the Arthur S. Flemming Award in Basic Science for his innovations in chemical imaging microscopy techniques. In 2024, he was named a NIST Fellow, a position reserved for visionary and technical leaders whose invaluable contributions allow NIST to achieve its mission.
