Barbara Gittings was the cofounder of the New York Chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, creating the groundwork for more q***r oriented spaces within the state.

Gittings also helped lobby against the American Psychiatric Association’s use of homosexuality in their Diagnostic Manual regarding Mental Disorders, helping to debunk the stereotype that sexuality could be associated with poor mental health. Her inexhaustible work continued with journalism, protesting, lobbying, and educational outreach until her passing on
February 18th, 2007.

Stay tuned for more LGBTQ+ History!

Join the LGBTRC and QGrads at the movies this semester with Cornell Cinema’s Q***r Classics film series! Partnering with Cornell Cinema, we are excited to present a selection of cult classic films that center LGBTQ+ stories of laughter, love, resilience, and community. 🍿🎥🎞️

Join us at the opening night of The Watermelon Woman (1996) this Saturday, October 25th at 5:30pm. Cheryl Dunye made cinematic history with The Watermelon Woman, the first American feature to be directed by a black le***an as well as an incisive, humorous critique of classic Hollywood’s racist stereotypes.

Dunye plays an eponymous video store employee and burgeoning filmmaker who sets out to make a documentary on the Watermelon Woman, an actress who specialized in “mammy” roles for Hollywood productions of the 30s and 40s. As Cheryl uncovers the Watermelon Woman’s identity she not only learns about a secret behind-the-scenes in*******al romance but also begins one of her own with Diana, a white woman who arouses the ire of Cheryl’s best friend Tamara.

Want to enjoy the film for free? Stop by the LGBTRC on Friday 10/24 to grab a free Admit One card (while supplies last) to use opening night (10/25) or at the second showing on Saturday, November 1 at 8pm.

Stay tuned for more free tickets and Q***r Classics! 🌈

This series foregrounds q***r films written or directed by q***r people, and aims to foster community and connection through the collective experience of the cinema. All are welcome!

In 1919, Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, a gay German sexologist and physician who had long researched members of the transgender community opened the Institut Für Sexualwissenschaft, the first clinic in the world to provide gender affirming hormones and other resources to q***r people.

This clinic would eventually be shut down due to opposition from the N**i Party. Many of the most infamous images of N**i book burnings come from the destruction of this facility.

Hirschfeld made revolutionary developments in q***r sexology and hormone replacement therapy and stands as an icon of q***r history.

Stay tuned for more LGBTQ+ History!
