Good Morning! Lake effect snow is expected today, along with the potential for snow squalls. The risk for snow squalls runs from mid morning through mid afternoon across both Central NY and NE PA. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for Onondaga and Madison Counties until 7pm this evening for the lake effect snow. Very cold air tonight will drop wind chill values near or below zero in places.

A Drought Warning has been declared in Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Oswego, and Jefferson Counties. These areas are currently under a D0-D2 for the drought and dryness categories which means that there has been a prolonged period of dryness resulting in the following impacts:
D0: stunted crop growth, elevated fire danger, and surface water levels declining.
D1: an increase in wildfires and below normal capacity levels in reservoirs and lakes.
D2: poor water and air quality, brittle vegetation, and a decrease in ground water.

Residents are strongly encouraged to voluntarily conserve water. Local agencies have discretion to initiate mandatory restrictions according to local codes and plans. Local public water suppliers may require conservation measures, depending on local conditions. If you are experiencing a water shortage, please contact your water supplier, local agricultural extension, or local health department.
There are steps you can take to help conserve water:
• Fix leaking pipes, fixtures, toilets, hoses, and faucets.
• Wash only full loads of dishes and laundry.
• Take shorter showers or fill the bathtub only half of the way.
• Reuse water collected from rain barrels, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners to water plants.
• Use a broom to clean driveways and sidewalks, instead of a hose.
• Don't run the tap to make water hot or cold.
• Wash cars less frequently.

***OUTDATED SEVERE WEATHER POST, THE INFORMATION HERE IS NO LONGER VALID.***

We now have a FIRST ALERT DAY issued for Tuesday. There is a risk of significant severe weather. Please read this post carefully and visit the link I have shared if you do not understand what it means.

There is a relatively rare Day 3 hatched area also, mainly north and west of Binghamton. This usually doesn't happen probably more than 2 or 3 times each year.

A hatched area (black slashes) indicates the SPC has placed a 10%, or greater, probability of significant severe weather in that area.

'Significant' is defined as: tornadoes rated EF2 or higher, Hail larger than 2" in diameter and/or winds 74mph or higher.

The percent values in the legend are probability ranges of seeing severe weather within 25 miles of any point in those areas.

The main threat in the hatched area this time would be for hail but depending on level of instability and the exact vertical wind profile, a strong tornado isn't completely out of the question.
