The Graduate Writing Service is a team of experienced graduate student tutors who can workshop your writing projects at ANY stage of the drafting process — invention, outlining, early and late-stage composing, and editing. Working within a cross-disciplinary framework, GWS tutors offer feedback on how to present problems to different readers by working on introductions or abstracts, organization and coherence, concision, and argument.

They can also work with your writing at the sentence level. Many of our clients—advanced writers like you—struggle with sentence-level clarity as they grapple with a lot of complex material. If you have been told your writing is unclear, you are not alone! GWS tutors can help you figure out what elements of your sentences could be improved so that your writing is clear, organized, persuasive, and valuable to readers.

The GWS does not dictate any rules about your writing—we aim to provide feedback from the perspective of your intended readers and offer tools so that you can look at specific aspects of your writing and figure out what works best for your readers. Call for Abstracts: Migration in Contentious Political Times

The Cornell Migrations Program invites students, scholars, and researchers from Cornell and the local community to participate in Migration in Contentious Political Times, taking place Friday, September 18 at Atkinson Hall.

The call for abstracts has recently reopened, with submissions due Friday, September 4.

They welcome work examining human mobility as a sociolegal and political process shaped by borders, barriers, state power, labor markets, changing environments, and inequality. Submissions may also situate migration within broader ecological and social systems, as well as contemporary or historical contexts.

Valuable lessons shared by Jason Marvin, Ph.D. During his during Cornell University Grad School alumni keynote at this year’s Summer Success Symposium:

- Pay attention to what makes you happy and what gives you a sense of purpose as you progress through grad school.

- Find a balance between time and energy spent on your academic program and opportunities that help you fulfill that sense of purpose.

- Form meaningful professional connections with individuals in your field and other areas of interest.

Open to Cornell doctoral students!
 
The State University of New York (SUNY), is pleased to announce the First-Generation Doctoral Student Consortium (FGDS), an eight-month, cohort-based professional and academic development program running from September 2026 – April 2027.

This program will provide hands-on intensive two-day convenings and strategically sequenced virtual sessions to help doctoral students thrive in their doctoral journeys. The program will hold its first session and have its official launch on September 30, 2026. 

Application Information: First-generation doctoral students can apply to become a member of the First-Generation Doctoral Student Consortium through the online application process. Online applications will open on Monday, July 20th and close on Thursday, September 3rd.

This has been a a very full week of welcome and orientation events! My team kicked it off with our annual Summer Success Symposium for new and continuing graduate students, which included engaging talks and workshops led by collegues, alumni, and graduate student leaders. Next, I got to contribute to new faculty orientation. And today, was the Graduate School’s Dean’s Welcome and Grad Connect resource fair.

The buzz and excitement among the newest members of our Cornell grad community could be felt everywhere. To be part of these activities, which require the leadership, support, and efforts of so many colleagues, was a wonderful experience, especially right now!
