Cornell Asian American Studies Program

Join us on Friday, March 26, 5-6 p.m. to hear Judy Han speak about queer activism in Korea and its history! Register here at the link (tinyurl.com/queermonth).

Judy Han (https://judyhan.com/) is a cultural geographer with interests in religion, mobilities, and difference. She works as a professor in Gender Studies at UCLA and is from a lot of places — mostly Seoul, northern and southern California, and both the west coast and eastern(ish) Canada. She escaped the hypernormative suburbs to UC Berkeley in the early 90s and majored in English and women’s studies, moved back to LA, and worked for a digital community networking initiative at The Getty. Between undergrad and grad school, and before and beyond that, she has worked as an activist, artist, all-around geek, and information designer. During this time, she was part of launching and building Californians for Justice (CFJ), an awesome statewide anti-racist organization that taught her so much about base building and grassroots organizing, and the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF), a national feminist organization that opened her eyes to a world of committed Asian American activists and advocates throughout the US. Professor Han returned to Berkeley to earn a PhD in geography and has held a Korea Foundation and SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship first in Asian Studies then in Geography at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, followed by a position in Geography at the University of Toronto. Her teaching and research interests generally lie at the nexus of cultural politics of mobility, religion, and difference, and most of her work deals with Korea and the Korean diaspora in some way. Her primary disciplinary homes are in geography, critical Korean studies, and transnational feminist studies, but she collaborates with all kinds of like-minded thinkers and kindred spirits in cultural anthropology, critical sociology, English and cultural studies, religious studies, film and media studies, history, and beyond. She relies on interdisciplinary and overlapping frameworks of cultural geography, postcolonial cultural studies, and critical race, sexuality and gender studies.

FYI: Virtual Event
Reinventing Family: The Rise of Non-Normative Households in South Korea
Monday, October 5, 2020 at 4:30pm to 6:00pm (EST)

The transformation of family patterns in advanced capitalist societies has received much attention in academic and popular writing. While “modern families” are widely accepted in Europe, alarm and anxiety characterize the tenor around the changes in East Asian family structures. South Korea serves as a case study to understand the mechanisms driving the diversification of family structures including single-parent households, multicultural families, unmarried singles, and (the isolation of) senior citizens.

Seeing how racism develops in a different historical setting helps us to understand its baselessness.

In last week’s #CornellRAD hour "We Will Not Remain Neutral: Dismantling Structural Racism in Our Archives," Bibliographer Dan Mckee examined how western racism was exported to early modern Japan, using materials from the Wason Collection on East Asia.
