Did you know that more than 17 million barrels of oil are required to meet the annual demand of plastic water bottles in the US alone? That is an extremely large amount and making the switch to reusable bottles is not only better for the environment, it is also better for your wallet!

Friendly reminder that there is a lot of single use plastics out there polluting the environment, and they are older than you are! Please think twice before using single-use plastics because this legacy is not one that you would like to be a part of.

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed how we live our lives. While they are essential for our safety, the uptake on single-use masks and gloves in our daily lives will unfortunately have consequences that’ll last much longer than this pandemic. So please whenever you can choose reusables, get informed and stay safe!!

We are one of 200+ affinity, cultural, and professional student organizations a part of the Cornell Students for Black Lives Coalition that is committed to utilizing their networks to amplify the black voices on campus in promoting activism and education to combat both blatant and implicit racism. As Engineers for a Sustainable World Cornell we are proud members of this coalition.

Acknowledging our financial privilege and resources at Cornell, we have started a fundraiser to support the ongoing movements against racial injustices, addressing both inequality in Ithaca and nationally. All donations to the will be split equally between Tompkins County Showing Up for Racial Justice, Southside Community Center, Communities United for Police Reform, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Black Lives Matter for Greater New York. Students, friends, family, alumni, and other community members, please show you support if you can donate, share, and check out this initiative for additional resources. With your help, we can magnify our impact to dismantle systems of oppression. The fundraiser has been extended till June 19th, so please show your support! We can all learn so much from her. See you guys there tomorrow!

Our first Executive Board spotlight is Jacqueline Wong, our wonderful previous President and incoming VP of Membership!!✨✨
She is from Hong Kong and a rising senior in Environmental Engineering. She joined ESW to work with local organizations to bring about small-scale, big impact sustainability projects! Outside of ESW, she does research on emerging water contaminants and their toxicological risk profiles with the Helbling Group, is the President of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and a House Manager of Triphammer Cooperative. She loves podcasts, science fiction novels and most recently, rock climbing!
Fun fact: She is a certified Rescue Diver (hooray for scuba safety)!

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers today that came out to our first ever Build Day at Ithaca Children's Garden! We had over 30 people help us build 10 planters for the garden! On top of that, volunteers also help out with other tasks around the garden such as building structures for beans to grow and weaving leaves to reinforce an art installation. We know the weather was not the best, which is why we are beyond thankful for everyone's great spirit throughout the day. Here are some photos of the wonderful planters we built, painted, and placed in their new home!

Thank you to Epsilon Eta Cornell volunteers for coming out to Build Day today!! We really appreciate the support!

Our Brothers had a great time volunteering at Ithaca Children’s Garden as part of ESW: Engineers for a Sustainable World - Cornell Chapter “Build Day”! We helped construct some #beanmachines (aka Tower Gardens) and build some new planter boxes! We can’t wait to see all of the beautiful plants growing in and on these structures soon!

You’ve seen us all week sharing what will be featured at our Build Day TOMORROW! From several exciting demonstrations to the chance for a hands-on building experience, and of course free food, there are so many reasons to come to Build Day. We hope to see you at Ithaca Children’s Garden tomorrow from 12-4, or however long you can come. We can’t wait to work with you for our community build! Don't forget to dress warmly and bring your own mug! :)

T-2 days until Build Day! Today we're spotlighting the final ESW team presenting at Build Day, Solar Generator. The solar powered generator was created to provide a portable source of power to rural communities in Nicaragua. At the battery's full capacity, it will provide 18 watts of power to whoever is using it. The battery is connected to a solar panel, so it can charge when placed in the sun. Come learn more about their project from 12-1 pm this Saturday at Ithaca Children's Garden!

04/24/2019

T-3 days until Build Day! Today we're spotlighting another ESW project, which will be presenting from 1-2 on Build Day. The Hydroturbine subteam is working to create a pico hydro system that will produce approximately 1-1.5 kW of power. This hydro system is run-of-the-river, meaning that it does not require a dam, unlike most hydropower configurations. They are working to implement this system in a creek behind Cornell’s campus. The energy produced by this turbine will be used to power light fixtures along an on-campus trail. The team is currently finalizing their design for the turbine system and working to build a half-scale model. They have also secured permission for their plans from Cornell Botanic Gardens and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. They hope to have the system up and running by the end of next spring!

Have a #BigIdea to improve your community’s resilience? Want to develop that idea to compete with other ESW students around the country? The Resilience Community Design Challenge is accepting proposals until this Saturday, September 30th, at 11:59EST! Proposals can be submitted to resilience.eswusa.org.
Are you passionate about sustainability issues in your community? Do you want to take action? I’m excited to announce that ESW-HQ has launched Resilient Community Design Challenge (RCDC), a national competition mobilizing teams of interdisciplinary ESW students to collaborate with community partners to tackle local sustainability issues. ESW chapters have some of the brightest and most creative minds in the country. We now challenge you to use them to better your communities. The deadline for proposals is September 30th. More details can be found online at www.resilience.eswusa.org. Want to learn more about this year’s RCDC program or even just ask for tips from previous projects? ESW-HQ will be hosting two Q&A sessions via Facebook Live over the next two weeks to provide you with a chance to answer any questions you may have while writing your proposals! Q&A sessions will be hosted via Facebook Live on the ESW-HQ page: https://www.facebook.com/eswhq/ First Q&A Session, Tuesday, September 19th, 9PM EST Second Q&A Session, Monday, September 25th, 9PM EST
Very important!!! Please share and act now. After declaring bankruptcy, Suniva, Inc. on April 26, 2017 filed a petition with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) asking the government to put its thumb on the scale of the U.S. solar market. This could double the price of solar panels and stop solar growth dead in its tracks. Take less than a minute to support American energy and #SaveSolarJobs by signing up for SEIA's Thunderclap campaign!
