[Panel IV: The Next Wave of China's Philanthropy]
April 19 14:35 - 15:55 196
The last two decades have witnessed a rapid growth of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in China. The establishment of Chinese NGOs is becoming increasingly popular as the necessity of providing private alternatives to solve social, economic, political, and cultural issues becomes prominent. As China is increasingly facing more internal challenges, such as basic education, public health, environmental protection and poverty alleviation, how to sustain China’s further development becomes the key problem for the whole society. A series of problems have arisen, which raises the concern of social responsibility and sustainability in the future. This panel will discuss the yesterday, today, and tomorrow of the Chinese NGOs, as well as examine the best possible path to confront these current and upcoming challenges.
• What is the implication of internal challenges politically and economically?
• How should the Chinese government manage these “soft” problems?
• In what kind of cooperation should the Chinese NGOs be with the mass media to urge the social attention?
Speakers in Panel IV:
Jose FERRAO - Executive Vice President, United Way Worldwidef
Yue YUAN - President of Horizon Research Consultancy Group
Xin HU - Director, Nonprofits in China Program, Harvard University
Weina Wang - Director of NPI Beijing
Jennifer TURNER - Director, China Environment Forum at Woodrow Wilson Center
