“Our goal was to create battery electrode designs that charge and discharge in ways that align with daily routine. In practical terms, we desire our electronic devices to charge quickly and operate for extended periods."

-- Shuo Jin, Cornell CBE Ph.D. Student

The April 2023 issue of Environmental Science & Technology, a leading journal in environmental science, has chosen the paper by Professor Fengqi You and PhD student Xiang Zhao as its front cover art. The paper, “Cascading Polymer Macro-Debris Upcycling and Microparticle Removal As An Effective Life Cycle Plastic Pollution Mitigation Strategy.” (Environmental Science & Technology, 57, 16, 6506–6519) presents an innovative solution to address marco- and micro-plastic pollution.

Their research focuses on cascading plastic waste processing, combined with fast pyrolysis upcycling technologies, to effectively reduce environmental losses caused by plastic pollution. The study highlights the potential of this approach to outperform landfills and incineration in mitigating environmental burdens, such as ozone formation and air pollution, while saving fossil fuels. This recognition emphasizes the significance of their work in tackling the critical issue of microplastics pollution and its global impact.

Loved honoring Bob Langer '70 yesterday as the 2023 Engineering Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award Recipient!
*
The Cornell Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizes engineering alumni whose vision and leadership has had a transformational impact on society, and whose professional accomplishments bring distinction to the college.
*
Robert Langer '70 is known as one of the most prolific inventors in the history of medicine. Often referred to as the Edison of Medicine, Langer once said "I was a chemical engineer on the one hand, and then I would be exposed to medicine. I would have two different disciplines. They were so different. You'd think 'well, you could combine them' and that would give me ideas that nobody at that time had - because nobody else had that kind of background."
