Today is one of those full-circle moments. 👏🏾💙❤️

To watch one of our own step forward and use her voice in service of justice, leadership, and community is powerful. Aznii Kyita Welchlin has consistently shown that activism is not something she studies from a distance—it is something she lives, leads, and carries with intention.

Ella Baker reminded us that “strong people don’t need strong leaders.” Today, we get to see what it looks like when a young scholar understands that leadership isn't about standing above people, but standing with them.

We are so proud to support Aznii as she delivers the Provost’s convocation keynote. May she speak boldly, lead freely, and remind every student in the room that their voice matters too!

As Black August comes to a close, Political Science scholars share their reflections on the histories, people, sacrifices, and struggles that continue to shape our understanding of freedom. We remember. We study. We carry the work forward. ✊🏾

On this extraordinary day, 12 Eaglets from our major and minor programs will take flight from the nest. Let us advance with unwavering resolve, embracing both the burdens and blessings of the spirit of excellence. As Rev. Reginald M. Buckley eloquently expressed, your inner convictions will shape your outward actions, leading you to achieve lasting, eternal results. 🎓❤️💙

Our 7th Annual Social Justice Week begins in the spirit of Tougaloo’s legacy, where students have never been passive observers of history, but architects of change.

We open the week with a critical question:
Who designs the future?

Join us for our kickoff AI panel as we examine the intersection of technology, institutional power, and student decision-making. From the Freedom Riders to today, Tougaloo scholars have challenged unjust systems and reshaped the political landscape. This week, we continue that tradition! Will you join us?

Join us this Saturday as we honor the legacy, resilience, and brilliance that define Black history—not as a moment in time, but as a living continuum.

The Coalition of Clubs & Organizations proudly leads this year’s Black History Exhibits, bringing our stories to life through student scholarship, performance, and historical reflection. This Exhibit is an act of remembrance, reclamation, and responsibility—an opportunity to engage the narratives that shaped our past and continue to inform our collective future.

This event was curated by Jaiden Joseph, former English Major and Pre-Law minor.

The pathway to the legal profession is not accidental—it is intentional, disciplined, and built through preparation!

Tomorrow’s Pre-Law Tour is an invitation to step into purpose. Tougaloo College continues to create spaces where our scholars can engage directly with institutions, practitioners, and opportunities that shape the future of justice. Yet access alone is not enough. Growth requires presence. Excellence requires participation. Legacy requires accountability.

As we move the Pre-Law Program forward, we expect our scholars to show up, lean in, and take ownership of the possibilities placed before them.

The doors are open. The question is: who is prepared to walk through them?

We’ve been working! The Department of Political Science proudly contributed to the Black Women & Girls in this year’s Intellectual Thought Symposium hosted by .c.o.n._research_series, an auspicious gathering honoring the intellectual lineage and transformative labor of Black women across disciplines.

Dr. Long , joined by Gen Z powerhouses Aznij Welchlin .storii_ and Nayla McClure .nicoleee, presented “Backbone of a True Utopia: Black Women’s Contributions to Public Policy, Political Science, and Social Justice.” This intergenerational trio illuminated the esoteric brilliance, civic tenacity, and world-building traditions of Black women—from ancient African governance to contemporary policy innovation.

Our session affirmed a translucid truth: Black women are not footnotes to democracy—they are its architects. Their intellectual might has shaped public policy, political theory, cultural power, and community survival long before such contributions were formally recorded.

We are profoundly grateful to the symposium organizers, our dynamic student scholars, and the broader Tougaloo community for elevating this imperative conversation. May we continue to honor, amplify, and institutionalize the scholarly and political labor of Black women as the backbone of any true utopia.
