When seniors invest in the lives of other seniors, that is not charity. That is a community rising to its true north.

The University of North Florida Brooks College of Health is proud to celebrate another year of partnership with Vicar's Landing, whose annual Charity Classic directly supports the UNF Meals on Wings program. Since 2018, Meals on Wings has recovered more than 185,000 pounds of food and delivered more than 225,000 meals to homebound seniors across NE FLorida.

Housed within the UNF Center for Nutrition and Food Security, Meals on Wings is a student-led initiative that recovers surplus prepared food from local hospitals and delivers nutritious, ready-to-eat meals to seniors in low-income communities. In Duval County, 1 in 7 seniors experiences food insecurity, a rate nearly double the national average. This program meets that need head-on.

At the heart of this partnership is D. Bruce Jones, CEO of Vicar's Landing Senior Services and chair of the B*H Leadership Institute at UNF. A former chair of the Brooks College of Health Dean's Council, Jones has built a career around elevating quality of life for seniors across North Florida. His commitment goes far beyond a check presentation. He is a co-author of what this work produces: healthier seniors, better-prepared health professionals and a stronger Northeast Florida community.

Big things are happening in UNF Public Health. 🦅

UNF junior Sariah Fisher earned an Undergraduate Research Scholarship and Creative Activities (U-RSCA) Training Grant to join the CLEAR study, a research initiative examining health behaviors, substance use, stress management and coping skills among college students.

Working alongside Dr. Nishi Dsouza and in partnership with CivCom and To***co Free Florida Jacksonville's NextGen Initiative, Sariah is collecting and analyzing real data that could shape how communities prevent addiction and support youth wellness.

This summer, she's doing the work. This fall, she'll share what she found.

At UNF, undergraduate research isn't a résumé line. It's a launchpad. UNF Office of Undergraduate Research
