The Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) is an interdisciplinary institute that serves students and faculty from all six UNF colleges. Our mission is to provide opportunities for environmental research and education, by leading interdisciplinary programs that enhance the student experience, prepare students for the workforce and or graduate school, and increase environmental scholarship and innovation. IERE programs and scholarships are 100% funded by donors and grants.

Kicking off the school year with a BUZZ! UNF students participated in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census in collaboration with UNF Ogier Garden and UNF Botanical Garden. Students in UNF's Environmental Honor Society - Kappa Alpha Omicron took the lead running this event, becoming site captains at UNF's Ogier Garden and Butterfly Garden. 📋🐝

Throughout the monitoring period, we hosted over 35 students at both sites and observed over 700 pollinator landings. Students observed many different species from butterfly, honeybees, bumble bees, carpenter bees, wasps, flies, and other insects. Their monitoring efforts contribute to community science across the southeast. 🔬🌼

New semester, new adventures, new connections with IERE!🌊🌎💙

Students in the Environmental Sustainability Living Learning Community began the year with a field trip retreat to the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve, where they explored Florida’s beautiful coastline, met fellow students, and started building the community that will support them throughout their college experience.

IERE had an eventful summer! From welcoming over 35 Environmental Science students at orientation to conducting fieldwork across Northeast Florida while visiting over 150 sites. This has been a great summer, but we're excited for an awesome school year ahead!🌳

This past March, IERE students had the opportunity to step outside the classroom and experience environmental science firsthand through a week-long trip to the Florida Everglades. Along the way, they visited national parks, explored historical landmarks across South Florida, and learned more about the unique environments and communities that make the region so special. Beyond the places they visited, students had the chance to connect with one another, gain new perspectives, and create memories that will last long after the semester ended. We’re proud to support experiences like these that bring learning to life both inside and outside the classroom 🦦☀️🏕️🔭

The Institute of Environmental Research and Education is excited to collaborate with the Northeast Florida Regional Council and other partners on a study funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to fill critical data gaps about aquatic organism passage, floodwater drainage, and infrastructure conditions at road-stream intersections across three major rivers in Northeast Florida.

IERE Research Scientist and incoming Visiting Professor Jesscia Barnes, Ph.D., and IERE Research Associate Sydney Barrett, MS, visited the Lake George Conservation Area and Bulow Creek State Park to establish research techniques and protocols for the project. They will lead a team of four UNF students to conduct field research.

Introducing IERE's newest YELP students.🎊 We received many applications for our 3rd year of the Youth Environmental Leadership Program and are so impressed with all the students who applied. Last week was YELP's Orientation at UNF. During this packed day, students learned about the program and IERE, got to know each other, walk around our beautiful campus, and so much more.🌴 Over the next year, each student will complete environmental training courses, create a community based project, and volunteer locally with the help of our IERE team. This is such an awesome group of students and we are looking forward to seeing their amazing work this year.✏️🌍
