Friends of the Houston Cole Library Welcome to the official page of the Friends of the Houston Cole Library at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama.

You are cordially invited to become a Friend of Houston Cole Library. The purpose of the organization is to promote an appreciation of the Library as the center of academic life at Jacksonville State University and to provide enrichment for its resources. Mission: The purpose of the Friends of Houston Cole Library shall be to promote an appreciation among the University constituency and the community at large, of the importance of the Library as the center of academic life at Jacksonville State University. It will accomplish this by: serving as a medium for those who share an enthusiasm for books and scholarship to further their knowledge of such matters; by promoting an understanding of the role of Houston Cole Library and its collections; and by providing a means to increase the resources of Houston Cole Library by attracting gifts of books and manuscripts, donations, and bequests to supplement the normal operating funds of the Library.

Parents & Guardians! Need to get out of the house during the summer? Drop by the Children's Corner, relax on the sofa, and let your children enjoy all the fun things the room has to offer. We now have plenty of board and card games for children 3 to 10 years of age. Put on a puppet show with our wide selection of fun, colorful puppets! Get on the stage with our toy instruments and children's microphone and put on a "concert." Have fun building at our Lego table. Use our many drawing instruction books and create a masterpiece in our arts and crafts area. Get comfy on a bean bag and read our big books. There's board books for babies and toddlers. Check out our Juvenile section, which includes over 23,000 children and young adult books. Most importantly, c'mon in and READ!

JSU English Alumnus James Matthew Byers will be on campus Monday January 23 at 3:30 p.m. to speak about his newly published verse translation of the Old English Epic, Beowulf. Copies will be available to purchase at the reception following the event, held at Stone Center, Room 234, sponsored by the English Department. Matt has won numerous poetry and writing awards and will be explaining his experience of promoting his book at Amazon. This event will be free and open to the public. We'll see you there!

Congratulations Calah Burton!

Ms. Calah Burton was awarded the 2016 Martha Cole Award today by Dean, John-Bauer Graham. The Martha Cole award is presented annually to the most outstanding student worker in the Library. The recipient receives a certificate along with a $200.00 award and their name will be added to the Martha Cole Award plaque located in the lobby of the Library.

Calah is assigned to the 4th floor where she helps our Business and Social Sciences Librarian, Ms. Kim Westbrooks.

On September 24, 2015, author Sonny Brewer presented at the Houston Cole Library as part of the Friends of Houston Cole Library's author talk series. Brewer's talk was about his fourth novel, "The Widow and the Tree," which won the 2012 Alabama Library Association's Novel of the Year. After the book talk, he stayed around to chat with attendees and sign copies of the book.

It was great to have author Sonny Brewer with us as the Friends' fall 2015 speaker. Sonny gave a great book talk about his 2012 Alabama Library Association Novel of the Year, "The Widow and the Tree." Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the evening with us!

Our spring author event has been set! Join us on March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Library as we welcome Lilly Ledbetter, whose fight for equal pay and women’s rights went all the way to the Supreme Court and resulted in the Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act.

Her story is told in “Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond,” which was published in 2012.

As always, admission to the event is free and open to the public and we'll have free refreshments for you. We'll also have copies of the book available for purchase and signing. We'll see you there!

He spoke about his memoir, "Blood Beneath My Feet: Journey of a Southern Death Investigator" and answered questions from the audience about his career as a medicolegal death investigator in New Orleans and Atlanta. Morgan also appears often on Headline News, where he provides forensics analysis for many high-profile cases. The program was sponsored by the Friends of the Houston Cole Library.

By cycle and by canoe, David Haynes and his canine companions Bailey and Roscoe have seen some of Alabama’s greatest natural places.
On Monday, March 4, 2013, Haynes shared their travel stories during a special evening program at the Houston Cole Library on the Jacksonville State University campus.
The author of Motorcycling Alabama, Fifty Loops Through the Heart of Dixie is an independent commercial photographer and journalist from Blount Springs who has spent his career documenting the people and places of Alabama. At the program sponsored by the Friends of the Houston Cole Library, he shared his stories and photos from the roads and rivers of Alabama, including highlights from a 45-day, 631-mile canoe trip he took down the Alabama Scenic River Trail in 2012 with the golden retrievers.
