Domestic Violence & Breast Cancer Awareness
Jacksonville, NC
The month of October is widely recognized for families celebrating one day which is known as Halloween. Families would get all dressed up in their costumes and start to canvass the neighborhood yelling door to door trick or treat. Beyond the trick or treating and costume wearing routines the month of October shows awareness for two specific issues that greatly impact families both mentally and physically.
The entire month of October is known as National Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness month. In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but when caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%. During Domestic Violence Awareness, victim’s advocates, allied professionals, survivors of abuse, their loved ones and the surrounding community come together to mourn the lives lost to domestic violence, celebrate the progress that has been made to end the epidemic, and connect with others working to create change.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. has 12 mandated programs that helped shape the standards for what the organization stands for and on October 31, 2024, the brothers of Phi Lambda Lambda participated in the Health Initiative program by hosting two parts zoom meeting that was opened to the public.
The first part of the zoom meeting was led by Brother Dr. Wilbert Cain. Dr. Cain medical practice is general family medicine, and his topic discussion was on Breast Cancer. He touched on the different types of breast cancer, what are some of the symptoms to look for, and how to properly attack issues before the problem gets any worse.
The second part of the zoom meeting was led by Lakeesa Butler LCSWA. Ms. Butler is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate, and a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and her topic of discussion was Domestic Violence. She discussed the different types of domestic abuse, the different types of issues that can cause domestic violence, whether both men and women cans suffer from domestic violence, and who to call if you know if any one is suffering from domestic violence.
The zooming meeting was very informative and helpful at the same time because they were carefully explained in detail just in case some one unaware. The month of October is more than just trick or treating and wearing costumes for one day. Family’s can show awareness by wearing either a pink or a purple ribbon for the whole month of October.
