History of the PLL Brothers......Brother Retired Col Grover C. Lewis III

Though he said his future is still full of service, to grasp the difference he’s made in our country, we look back at his 30-year career in the Marine Corps and those who served before him.

“I was the first African American C.O. of Camp Johnson, which was the home of where the original Montford pointers were trained,” said Lewis, “They were the first black marines in the marine corps allowed to enlist from 1942 to 1949.”

Colonel Lewis made history here in ENC as the first African American commanding officer at Camp Johnson.

Nominations are in for the United States Veteran’s hall of fame, and one of those nominees is a retired colonel in ENC. In this week’s ENC hero, we introduce you to retired Colonel Grover Lewis the third and his journey as the first African American commanding officer at Camp Johnson. &l...

Domestic Violence & Breast Cancer Awareness

Jacksonville, NC

The month of October is widely recognized for families celebrating one day which is known as Halloween. Families would get all dressed up in their costumes and start to canvass the neighborhood yelling door to door trick or treat. Beyond the trick or treating and costume wearing routines the month of October shows awareness for two specific issues that greatly impact families both mentally and physically.

The entire month of October is known as National Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness month. In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but when caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%. During Domestic Violence Awareness, victim’s advocates, allied professionals, survivors of abuse, their loved ones and the surrounding community come together to mourn the lives lost to domestic violence, celebrate the progress that has been made to end the epidemic, and connect with others working to create change.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. has 12 mandated programs that helped shape the standards for what the organization stands for and on October 31, 2024, the brothers of Phi Lambda Lambda participated in the Health Initiative program by hosting two parts zoom meeting that was opened to the public.

The first part of the zoom meeting was led by Brother Dr. Wilbert Cain. Dr. Cain medical practice is general family medicine, and his topic discussion was on Breast Cancer. He touched on the different types of breast cancer, what are some of the symptoms to look for, and how to properly attack issues before the problem gets any worse.

The second part of the zoom meeting was led by Lakeesa Butler LCSWA. Ms. Butler is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate, and a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and her topic of discussion was Domestic Violence. She discussed the different types of domestic abuse, the different types of issues that can cause domestic violence, whether both men and women cans suffer from domestic violence, and who to call if you know if any one is suffering from domestic violence.

The zooming meeting was very informative and helpful at the same time because they were carefully explained in detail just in case some one unaware. The month of October is more than just trick or treating and wearing costumes for one day. Family’s can show awareness by wearing either a pink or a purple ribbon for the whole month of October.

PLL BRICK - MONTFORD POINT MARINES MEMORIAL

The Montford Point Marines Memorial (MPMA) is dedicated to the legacy of nearly 20,000 African-Americans who served in the Marine Corps from 1942 - 1949, but trained in a segregated training facility know as Montford Point Camp, Jacksonville, NC. The memorial tells the story through architecture and sculpture. The memorial is located within the LeJeune Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville, NC.

November 1, 2010 – Jacksonville, NC – MPMA initiated a nationwide funding campaign to construct a commemoration memorial to honor 20,000 Montford Point Marines. These Marines of color, trained on the hallowed grounds of the then, Camp Montford Point. Those Marines lead the charge with combating racial inequality and dismantling bias perceptions during WWII. The Montford Point Marines went on to fight for the “Right to Fight” along with and beside their counterparts. Many of those determined Marines made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
