On July 30, UNF Public Health students showcased their internship and research experiences during the ✨Summer 2026 Public Health Internship and Research Showcase✨

Through experiential learning opportunities, students applied classroom knowledge in real-world settings, working alongside community partners, public health organizations, health care agencies and faculty mentors. Presentations highlighted the innovative projects, research initiatives and internship experiences that helped students develop professional skills and gain valuable insight into the field of health.

The showcase celebrated the impact of hands-on learning and the dedication of students who are preparing to make a difference in the health and well-being of their communities. Thank you to our faculty mentors, internship preceptors and community partners for supporting these meaningful learning experiences.

UNF Anthropology and Public Health Students Return from Bali!

This summer, UNF Anthropology and Public Health students traveled to Indonesia for Living Traditions: Culture, Religion, and Health in Bali, an immersive study abroad experience led by Dr. Cristy Cummings, Dr. Ronald Lukens-Bull, and Public Health Instructor Katryne Lukens Bull.

Through hands-on learning and community engagement, students explored how culture, religion, sustainability, and health are deeply connected in Balinese life.

Highlights included:

🌾 Working alongside local farmers and learning how traditional rice farming practices support environmental sustainability, food security, and community health.

♻️ Visiting Magi Farm, where black soldier fly larvae are used to transform food waste into valuable resources, demonstrating innovative solutions to environmental and public health challenges.

🤝 Partnering with local organizations to prepare more than 150 meals for community members facing economic hardship, while discussing ethical service, dignity, and social responsibility.

🏫 Visiting Bali Bina Insani Islamic Boarding School, where students learned about health education, religious tolerance, and the role schools play in promoting healthy, inclusive communities.

Throughout the program, students gained firsthand insight into the social, cultural, environmental, and economic factors that influence health. By engaging directly with local communities, they developed a deeper appreciation for cultural humility, global citizenship, and community-based approaches to addressing complex challenges.

More than a study abroad trip, this experience brought anthropology and public health concepts to life while creating lasting memories and meaningful connections across cultures.

We're proud to spotlight Winta Addisu, a student in UNF's 4+1 Bachelor of Health Science in Public Health to Master of Public Health (MPH) Track, for her outstanding commitment to health education and community service in Ethiopia! 🌍💙

Through the National Public Health Education Honorary, Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG), Winta organized a donation drive to collect much-needed supplies for students at Mary Joy Ethiopia. During her visit, she toured the Hawassa Program Office and had the opportunity to meet many of the children and elders served by the organization.

A few weeks after delivering the donated supplies, Winta returned to the Mary Joy Youth Center in Hawassa, where she led a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) presentation for youth ages 12-17. She shared practical information about handwashing, food and water safety, and ways to protect the health of others.

In addition to educating youth, Winta met with the Youth Center's Project Coordinator to learn more about current initiatives focused on skill-building and workforce readiness, helping young people develop the tools they need to secure employment after graduation.

Reflecting on the experience, Winta described it as both meaningful and fulfilling. We are incredibly proud of the impact she made through service, education, and public health leadership, and we look forward to seeing where her passion takes her next.
