A Life Woven Into History: Stories That Connect Generations

This Filipino American History Month, the UP Alumni Association in America invites you to look at history through a deeply personal lens.

Join us for “A Life Woven Into History: Otto Johns Scheerer,” a special virtual conversation featuring UP alumnus Richard Scheerer, MD, who will share the story of his grandfather, Otto Johns Scheerer — a German entrepreneur, scholar, educator, and linguist whose life intersected with significant chapters of Philippine history.

Why does this matter?

History is not only found in textbooks, dates, and major events. It also lives in family photographs, personal accounts, migration stories, relationships, and memories passed from one generation to another.

For Filipino Americans, preserving these stories helps us better understand the connections between the Philippines and America and how individual lives became woven into our shared history.

As UP alumni, we also have an opportunity to help keep these stories alive — to remember, document, share, and pass them forward.

Friday, October 23, 2026, from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM EDT
Philippine Time: Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM PHT

Here is the Zoom information:

Meeting ID: 873 6573 8935
Passcode: 184769

Join the conversation. Bring your curiosity — and perhaps think about the stories in your own family that deserve to be remembered.

Because when we preserve a story, we preserve a piece of history.

HIBLA MINDANAO: WEAVING CULTURE, COMMUNITY, AND BAYANIHAN INTO OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATION

$2,500 for UP Mindanao Scholarships. One meaningful partnership. A shared commitment to giving back.

As we celebrate Filipino American History Month, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in America (UPAAA) proudly recognizes the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston (FACCGH) for its generous $2,500 contribution toward UP Mindanao Scholarships, presented on October 19, 2026.

The contribution follows Hibla Mindanao, a cultural fashion show organized by FACCGH on October 3 and hosted by UPAAA President Ryan Tejero, celebrating the extraordinary Indigenous textiles, traditional fashion, and cultural heritage of Mindanao.

But beyond the runway lies a much bigger story.

Mindanao is home to talented, ambitious young Filipinos whose dreams of earning a UP education deserve the same recognition, encouragement, and opportunities as those of students anywhere in the Philippines.

And this is why partnerships matter.

FACCGH has demonstrated that you don’t have to be a UP alumnus to make a difference in a UP student’s future.

Through meaningful collaborations with organizations beyond our alumni network, UPAAA can build bridges between communities, celebrate our shared heritage, and mobilize support for the next generation of scholars.

This is bayanihan in action—Filipinos and friends of the Philippines coming together across organizations, backgrounds, and borders for a common purpose.

Our heartfelt gratitude to FACCGH, UPAAA President Ryan Tejero, and everyone who helped make Hibla Mindanao a celebration with purpose.

As Filipino American History Month reminds us, our legacy is not only found in the history we celebrate but also in the opportunities we create for those who come after us.

LET’S BUILD MORE BRIDGES!

UPAAA welcomes businesses, chambers of commerce, civic and cultural organizations, foundations, fellow alumni associations, and individuals who share our passion for education, heritage, and community service.

Whether through scholarship contributions, fundraising events, cultural collaborations, sponsorships, or community initiatives, there is a place for you in our mission.

Let’s turn more partnerships into opportunities and more opportunities into brighter futures.

Together, we can keep the spirit of bayanihan alive—one partnership, one scholar, and one community at a time.

Interested in partnering with UPAAA? Connect with us and let’s explore what we can accomplish together!

A PROUD UPAAA MOMENT!

CONGRATULATIONS, PRES. RYAN TEJERO!

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association in America (UPAAA) proudly celebrates Ryan Tejero, UPAAA President and Editor of One Philippines News, on being named Influencer of the Year at the 2026 Houston Community Media Journalism Awards, presented by Houston Community Media!

The awards celebrate Houston’s community storytellers and recognize outstanding reporting produced for Greater Houston’s multicultural communities.

This year’s competition drew more than 80 submissions across eight categories. Judges selected nine first-place winners, eight second-place winners, and two special award recipients for excellence in website journalism and social media influence.

The winning journalism addresses issues ranging from immigration, mental health, and LGBTQ+ visibility to disaster preparedness, homeownership, women’s health, parenting, sports, and cultural traditions.

“These awards showcase ethnic media’s dedication to telling the stories and amplifying the voices of Houston’s diverse multicultural communities,” said Sandy Close, Director Emeritus of American Community Media.

“At a time of historic challenges facing the entire news industry, the awards celebrate not just individuals but the entire sector for lifting up the experiences of their communities, sometimes breaking cultural taboos in the process.”

This recognition marks not only a significant personal achievement but also a proud moment for the UP alumni and Filipino American communities.

Through his dedication to journalism, community storytelling, and Filipino American representation, Ryan exemplifies how leadership and media can amplify voices, strengthen connections, and inspire meaningful community engagement.

WHY IT MATTERS TO UPAAA

This achievement reflects the UP tradition of Honor, Excellence, and Service, reminding us of the meaningful impact UP alumni continue to make beyond borders.

Building Wealth, Building Legacies

The UP Alumni Association in America (UPAAA) invites our alumni, families, and friends to “Building Wealth, Building Legacies,” a timely conversation about making informed financial decisions with the resources we have today.

Join Isidro C. dela Cruz, stock market investor and author of Investing for Life, and Jun B. Orteza, PhD, financial educator, with Ma. Guia R. Palma, MD, as moderator.

Friday, September 25, 2026
6–7 p.m. PST | 9–10 p.m. EST
Via Zoom
Meeting ID: 874 3622 8853 | Passcode: 700543

Why it matters to UPAAA: Building a strong alumni community goes beyond professional connections. It also means creating opportunities to learn, share knowledge, make better-informed financial choices, and think about the legacies we build for our families and future generations.

Your financial journey can start wherever you are today. Join the conversation, invite a fellow UP alum or friend, and help us grow a community where knowledge is shared and passed forward.
