It is my honor to announce Dr. Julie Baker-Townsend, APRN, as the 2026 Student Health Services DAISY ๐ŸŒผ Awardee. Her patients clearly see the difference she makes. She creates a space where patients feel safe, especially when they need it most. She listens in ways that validate their concerns and empowers their voices. She goes beyond the expected, ensuring that every patient leaves with clarity, confidence and trust in their care. Congratulations, Julie!

Advancing patient care takes more than knowledge. It takes collaboration, application and a commitment to doing things better.

At the University of North Florida Brooks College of Health, the Nurse Anesthesiology Symposium brought together faculty, students and clinicians to explore how research translates into practice.

Throughout this series, we have seen that progression in action.
From building a strong foundation in pharmacologyโ€ฆ
To applying new approaches in pain managementโ€ฆ
To improving patient safety through practical interventionsโ€ฆ
To rethinking the future of anesthesia.

Each step points in the same direction.

Better outcomes. Safer care. Stronger practice.

At UNF, this work is not theoretical. It is happening now, in classrooms, in clinical settings and in partnership with the healthcare community.

This is what it means to move healthcare forward.

The future of anesthesia is being shaped by how care is delivered.

At the symposium, Dr. John P. McDonough highlighted opioid-sparing, multimodal analgesia. This approach reduces or eliminates the use of opioids and traditional anesthetic agents during surgery.

This shift is reflected in earlier presentations, from magnesium use to patient-centered interventions.

Takeaway: The future of patient care focuses on safer, more precise and evidence-based approaches.

At UNF, that future is already taking shape.

Small changes in clinical practice can lead to meaningful improvements in patient outcomes.

UNF students Cramer Carter and Emilee Gonzalez presented on the prophylactic use of ondansetron to reduce spinal-induced hypotension.

Although evidence supports its effectiveness, this approach remains underutilized in practice.

Takeaway: Low-risk, evidence-based interventions can significantly improve patient safety when applied consistently.

From understanding to application to measurable impact.

Next, we look at the broader shift shaping the future of anesthesia.

Understanding the science is one thing. Applying it to patient care is where impact happens.

UNF Nurse Anesthesiology students Allison Hronek and Hyo Jeong Kim presented on the use of magnesium to reduce postoperative pain.

Their work supports a shift toward multimodal analgesia, an approach that reduces reliance on opioids while maintaining effective pain control.

Takeaway: Evidence-based alternatives can improve patient outcomes while reducing risk.

Some of the most effective changes in care are also the simplest.

Next, we look at how small interventions can improve patient safety.

National recognition matters. But what matters more is what it represents.

The University of North Florida is ranked among U.S. News and World Report 2026 Best Graduate Schools, with five programs from the Brooks College of Health earning distinction:

โœ” Doctor of Nursing Practice
โœ” Healthcare Management
โœ” Nursing โ€“ Anesthesia
โœ” Physical Therapy
โœ” Public Health

These rankings reflect more than academic quality. They reflect programs designed around where healthcare is going.

At the Brooks College of Health, students are not just learning healthcare. They are stepping into it. Working alongside clinical partners. Solving real challenges. Preparing to lead in a system that is changing fast.

If you are looking for a graduate program that connects education to impact, this is where that work is happening.

Every clinical decision begins with a strong understanding of the science behind it.

At the symposium, Dr. Katherine Meuti presented on the pharmacologic actions of antihypertensive medications and their impact during the perioperative period.

Her work connects molecular-level science to real-time clinical decision-making.

Takeaway: A strong foundation in pharmacology leads to safer and more precise patient care.

Understanding the science is only the first step.

Next, UNF students apply that knowledge to improve how pain is managed.
