Last week, we celebrated the recipients of the Dr. Diana Nunley Scholarship with an appreciation dinner at Juan Siao, in Downtown Johnson City.

The scholarship honors Dr. Nunley-Gorman, a member of one of Quillen’s earliest graduating classes and a first-generation college student who dedicated more than 40 years to internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Recipients are selected for their strong academic potential, resilience and commitment to service. When funding is available, the scholarship is intended to cover the recipient’s full in-state tuition and mandatory fees, providing meaningful support as students work toward earning their Doctor of Medicine degree.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients: Brody Carmack, Linsey Stiles, Lauren Milam, Logan Byrge, Nikko Beady, Ryleigh Fleming, Jaylah Nunez-Radden, Jannelle Bannor, Jordan Moore and Radha Awasthi. 👏

For Lauren Milam of the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine, receiving a white coat represents the start of a journey years in the making. After years of hard work and determination, the dream of becoming a physician is now a reality.

Lauren's path to medicine was inspired by the community she calls home. Growing up in a rural area with limited access to health care, she saw firsthand how geography can affect a person's ability to receive care. Now, she's working toward becoming part of the solution.

As Lauren puts it: "You can't do all of the good that the world needs, but the world needs every last bit of good that you can do."

Congratulations to Dr. Kun Yang on receiving a $3.1 million NIH grant to investigate how elevated lactate may affect the immune system after sepsis, with the goal of improving recovery for survivors.

Congratulations to Mary Brown, fourth-year medical student, on her election as a student delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates! 👏

Mary was elected at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students in Kansas City following a multiday election process with medical students from across the country. She’ll represent medical students at the AAFP Congress of Delegates in Nashville this October!

Growing up in Appalachia, Mary saw firsthand how limited access to care, addiction, poverty and physician shortages can affect communities. Her experiences at Quillen have shaped her passion for advocacy and rural and underserved health care.

“Advocacy means looking beyond the individual patient to the communities, systems and policies that shape their health, choices and opportunities,” Mary said.
