Student Spotlight: Meet David Iyiola!

What happens when you combine engineering, technology, data and a desire to solve real-world problems? For David Iyiola, it means reimagining how we understand and manage the buildings around us.

David earned his master’s degree from ETSU in May 2026 in Engineering Technology, with a concentration in Digital Construction and Data Analytics. Originally from Nigeria, David came to ETSU because of its distinctive engineering programs and community-focused values and found the perfect place to bring his interests together.

His graduate research focused on digital twin technology: creating interactive digital representations of buildings by combining 3D models, IoT sensors, occupancy and environmental data, and analytics.

The goal? To make buildings easier to understand, monitor and manage. 🏢📊

David is especially proud that his research became more than a thesis. He developed a functioning system that involved 3D modeling, software development, building IoT sensors, collecting real-world data and deploying the system in actual university spaces.

“Seeing something I spent so much time researching and building move beyond a thesis and have the potential for real-world use has been extremely rewarding.”

That hands-on approach is exactly what David values about Engineering Technology:

“It is not only about understanding how something works theoretically, but also about figuring out how to design, build, implement, test, and improve it in the real world.”

During his time at ETSU, David worked with faculty including Dr. Moin Uddin, Dr. Biju Bajracharya, Dr. Fenfen Wang and Dr. Joseph Shrestha, as well as the Facilities Management team, taking his research beyond the classroom and into campus spaces.

And he’s not stopping there.

David hopes to continue working at the intersection of engineering and technology, exploring digital twins, smart buildings, IoT, building automation and data-driven facility management.

When he’s not working on the future of smart buildings, you might find David watching movies, swimming, spending time with friends or enjoying a plate of rice and beans. 🍚🏊‍♂️

David is exactly the kind of student we love to spotlight: curious enough to ask what’s possible, skilled enough to build it and determined enough to take it into the real world. 💙💛

🧠 Faculty Spotlight: Meet Evan O’Donnell!

Please join us in welcoming Evan O’Donnell, ETSU’s new Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies!

A Princeton, New Jersey native, Evan joined ETSU in Fall 2026. His research focuses on Pyrrhonian skepticism: the philosophical idea that instead of settling on one particular answer, we should “suspend judgment” and continue asking questions.

And apparently, the habit of asking questions started early.

“In elementary school I discovered that if you kept asking adults ‘why’ questions they would eventually give up on trying to explain things and yell at you, which I found delightful, so I would say philosophy was in the cards for a long time.”

Today, Evan’s favorite part of teaching is watching students discover their own philosophical voices. “I love getting to see students find their voice and articulate their own philosophical positions in conversation with philosophers from across history.”

He also wants students to know that philosophy is about more than ancient texts and abstract ideas. The department helps students develop critical thinking skills, offers courses that fulfill Compass Core Curriculum requirements and includes a Justice, Ethics, and Law concentration for students interested in law school. There’s even an active philosophy club!

Outside the classroom, Evan enjoys drawing comics and playing video games, specifically Boson X, which he says he has spent over 2,000 hours playing. He also has a strong opinion on lunch: “I don’t think you can go wrong with a Chicago Dog.”

“The most rewarding part of this job is getting to think and talk about philosophy for a living, which is such an enormous privilege and something that I will never take for granted.”

The ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries, in partnership with campus and community organizations, proudly present Gee’s Bend Now at the Tipton-Ashe Galleries from September 2–25, 2026.

For generations, the Gee’s Bend community in Alabama has created an extraordinary quilting tradition known for its bold colors, innovative designs and deeply personal expressions of creativity, heritage and spirit. Today, new generations of Gee’s Bend quilters continue that legacy while creating distinctive artistic voices of their own.

We are especially honored to welcome Emma Mooney Pettway and her daughter, Lakarian Pettway, to Johnson City for the opening reception!

🎶 Honoring a legend of Appalachian music

The Reece Museum is honored to host the reception for *Rising Sun: The Musical Legacy of Clarence “Tom” Ashley, celebrating the life and legacy of one of the most influential figures in the history of Bluegrass and Old-Time music.

A Mountain City, Tennessee native, Clarence “Tom” Ashley (1895–1967) left an enduring mark on American music. Among his many contributions, Ashley recorded the original version of “House of the Rising Sun” (the song that The Animals would later popularize for a new generation).

The Rising Sun exhibition offers a look at Ashley’s remarkable life and musical legacy, featuring instruments and ephemera used during his resurgence in the 1960s, along with recordings of his performances collected by his grandson, Joe Ashley. The exhibition is curated by Reece Museum staff in collaboration with Joe Ashley as part of the Tennessee Music Pathways program.

The reception will include remarks from Dr. Ted Olson, Professor of Appalachian Studies, an Old-Time musical performance, and an Old-Time jam session.

Bring your instrument and join the jam or simply come celebrate the legacy of a true Appalachian music legend.

🌎 Student Spotlight: Meet Noah Winslow!

What happens when you combine a love of the outdoors, a passion for science and a desire to make a difference? You get students like Noah Winslow.

A senior pursuing a B.S. in Geosciences with a concentration in Geology and Environment, Noah chose ETSU in part because of its location. Johnson City gives him the best of both worlds: the amenities of a small city with incredible access to nature and the Southern Appalachians as a living laboratory for geology.

His focus is hydrology and hydrogeology, with a goal of studying and managing groundwater resources after graduation.

And his studies have a very real-world impact.

“Geology impacts everything that we do.”

From determining where cities can be built and crops can be grown to providing the minerals needed for computers and smartphones, geology is connected to the world around us in ways we often don't realize.

Noah found his path through conversations with professors, a fundamentals of hydrology class and an internship that confirmed he was headed in the right direction. Along the way, he’s stayed busy with the Geoscience Club and the Appalachian Self-Reliance Coalition, while spending his free time hiking and camping.

But Noah’s story also shows that there’s no single timeline for getting a degree.

He came to ETSU as an adult learner, after getting married, traveling and working full time for five years between earning his associate degree and beginning at ETSU. That life experience, he says, has benefited him immensely.

When asked what he loves about ETSU, Noah points to the balance:

“There is a nice balance between opportunities related to my major and things that are just for fun like sports and trips.”

That’s the kind of student we’re proud to have at ETSU: curious, engaged, adventurous and ready to take what they learn and use it to make a difference.

And for future Bucs considering their own path: you don't have to have it all figured out yet. Your journey can take you somewhere amazing.

Faculty Spotlight: Meet Alicia Vorel! 🎶

Please join us in welcoming Alicia Vorel, ETSU’s new Director of Music Education in the Department of Music!

A Columbia, South Carolina native, Alicia began her ETSU journey this August. Her research interests include soprano-alto choir identity, authentic context learning, feedback systems, and turn-of-the-twentieth-century music educators and singing schools.

Her path to music began early. “I enjoyed singing and playing piano from a young age and I knew that I always wanted to do something in music!” Her love of working with young people eventually brought those passions together.

Now, one of her favorite parts of teaching is “Watching students grow and become their most authentic selves.” And when it comes to the most rewarding part of her work? “Watching students grow and have those AHA! Moments.”

She also wants students and our community to know that the Department of Music is “rigorous, thriving, and has grown exponentially in the last ten years.” With around 65% of the department made up of undergraduate music education majors, the program is preparing the next generation of music educators.

Outside of the classroom, you might find Alicia running, baking or spending time with her two Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Riley and Buddy. And one important fact you should know: “I start decorating for Christmas on Halloween!”

The first day of classes is officially here and history is being made!

Today marks a major milestone for ETSU: the first classes ever are meeting inside the new Academic Building! 🎉

From students settling into their classrooms to faculty teaching their first lessons in the new space, these photos capture the beginning of something that will become part of the ETSU experience for generations to come. 💙💛

Lela is a freshman studying Sports Management, a member of the ETSU softball team, and her first class in the new building was COMM 2025.

The ribbon has officially been cut!✂️

Today, we officially cut the ribbon on the new Academic Building, and what a celebration it was!

We were honored to celebrate alongside President Brian Nolan, SGA President Shelby Koerten, Bucky, Sergeant Pepper and so many members of the ETSU community who came together to mark this incredible milestone. 💙💛

But today wasn’t just about a building. It was about what happens inside it.

On Monday, a new generation of students will walk through these doors for the very first time. They’ll learn, question, create, discover, make lifelong friendships and begin building futures we can’t yet imagine.

In 1911, when ETSU first opened its doors, that generation of faculty and staff couldn’t have known what their school would become or the countless lives it would touch over the next century. But they believed in what they were building. They believed education had a purpose.

More than 100 years later, we carry that same responsibility forward.

We may not know exactly what the students walking into this building on Monday will accomplish. We may not know where their ideas will lead or what their generation will build.

But we can believe in them.
We can believe in their purpose.
And we can build something worthy of the future they will create.

Here’s to a new building, a new generation and the next chapter of ETSU.

What if your classroom could be Rome? 🌎

For Emma Hurley, an ETSU summer experience turned her studies into an unforgettable adventure.

A sophomore interior architecture student in the ETSU College of Arts & Sciences, Emma spent five weeks in Italy through ETSU Studio Rome, an immersive study abroad program built into her major. She studied architecture, sustainability, history and culture while experiencing some of the world’s most iconic buildings firsthand.

“There's something about experiencing architecture in person that just can't be captured in photos or textbooks.”

That’s the power of an ETSU education: learning doesn’t have to stay inside a classroom. Whether your major takes you to Rome, into a research lab, onto a stage, into a community, or across the globe, ETSU offers opportunities to turn what you’re learning into experiences that shape who you become.

Emma says the experience helped her grow “as a student, a designer and a person.”

And that opportunity isn’t limited to one major. Students across the College of Arts & Sciences (and across ETSU) can find ways to explore their interests, gain hands-on experience, study abroad, build new skills and see where their education can take them.

Your major can be more than a degree. At ETSU, it can be your starting point for discovering the world.
