Every year, Lemelson-MIT gives grants to a few high school teams of inventors to support their inventions over the course of the school year, and then in the early summer the teams are invited to MIT to present their findings. This year, Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center's team has received a $7,500 grant, along with seven other high school teams across the country. ATYP alumni, Hanish Chintalapati, Malik Glass, and Aurora Arendsen are currently members of that team! They are currently in the process of designing their prototype, but are experiencing some roadblocks in terms of funding since the desired invention process involves the use of an infrared spectrometer, a very expensive tool. Follow them on their Instagram page to see how you can help them out!

The 2024-2025 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams were selected by a panel of esteemed judges after several months of researching problems within their community that could be addressed with a technological solution. Teams will continue to learn more about the problems they selected in the first half of the gra...

Congratulations to ZooBOTix #16646 on earning the Marie Curie Division Finalist at the State Championship NW in Muskegon, MI!
Kalamazoo Public Schools

Last weekend ZooBOTix competed at the FTC State Championship. At the end of qualification matches, ZooBOTix was the 4th ranked team of 36 in our division, earning the right to captain our own alliance. However, we accepted an invitation to join the #1 seed alliance for a better shot at the Championship.

Our alliance breezed across the upper bracket in our division, even earning an event high score! We fought valiantly in the bracket finals, but in the end, fell twice to become the divisional runners-up.

This event concluded the 2024 middle school robotics season. Next year's season begins in September.

Congratulations to all of our hard-working middle schoolers who have dedicated countless hours to reach this impressive achievement. There are almost 800 FTC robotics teams in Michigan and very few reach the level that they reached this year.

This year's team is made up of students from Hillside, Linden Grove, Maple Street, Millwood, and Portage West middle schools. We also have two student mentors from Kalamazoo Central High School.

As KPS is closed tomorrow, Thursday, December 5, ATYP will not have in-person classes. If you normally have class on Thursdays, check your WMU email. Your teacher will explain how they will be handling class.

We hope all of you are warm and safe. Remember, even if you don't have class today, you do have new homework to do for next week.

12/04/2024

Just a reminder, as the new storm front moves in, if Kalamazoo Public Schools are closed due to weather, ATYP does not have in-person classes. If KPS is open but the roads where you live are nasty, please just use your best judgement. Students are not penalized if they can’t get here due to bad weather, and instructors will let them know what to do in terms of class learning.

If we do not have in-person class, teachers will email students to let them know how class is being held that day – online all at the same time, watching a video of instruction, etc. Students will be expected to do something virtually, but each instructor does it a little differently.

If ATYP is closed, we will post the closing on WWMT Channel 3 and on Facebook.

Congratuations to ZooBOTix on their success in their second qualifier at Lakeview, MI last weekend!

Kalamazoo Public Schools

Their hard work since the last competition paid off with an improved performance, even in the face of a tough schedule. Again, ZooBOTix was picked to play in the #2 seed alliance. This time our alliance dominated the upper bracket of the double-elimination playoffs, breezing their way into the finals. Only there were we bested in a narrow margin and ended as the runners-up. Out of thousands of FTC teams, we own the 3rd highest match score and are one of the highest ranked teams in the world!

Off the field, the judges were impressed by the ingenuity of our robot design, and ZooBOTix came away with the first place Innovate Award.

We are looking forward to competing against the stiff competition at the Michigan State Championship NW on December 13th and 14th in Muskegon, MI!

In the spirit of FIRST, our kids competed with class and good sportsmanship representing their schools well.

This year's team is made up of students from Hillside, Linden Grove, Maple Street, Millwood, and Portage West middle schools. We also have two student mentors from Kalamazoo Central High School.
