I share my story because maybe it could help you or a friend feel not so alone. I share my story to reduce the stigma and shame surrounding su***de and mental illness. I share my story because it gives me closure to that time in my life. I share my story because my voice is my power.

As you know, September is su***de prevention month. Several years ago I attempted su***de. Ironically, the next morning I went to 9th grade health class and learned about su***de prevention/warning signs. A few months later, I realized I could trust that teacher and went to tell her about my previous attempt. She helped me get help and put me in touch with the right people. She supported me from then on. I just had to ask for help.

Ever since then, I have strived to teach myself about mental illness and more recently, to teach others. Learning about mental illness is one way to help reduce the stigma. This is why Active Minds is my passion & maybe my life purpose. ~mc
