Happy Lunar New Year 2025!
新年快樂
새해 복 많이 받으세요
ལོ་གསར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་བདེ་ལེགས།
Chúc Mừng Năm Mới

Lunar New Year is a festival celebrated in many countries in Asia and by people of Chinese, Korean, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Vietnamese descent around the world. Celebrations, customs, and traditions vary from region to region and the dates may differ for the Mongolian and Tibetan Lunar New Years. Lunar New Year is also known as:
- Chinese Spring Festival / Chinese New Year (Chūn Jié)
- Korean New Year (Seollal)
- Mongolian Lunar New Year / White Moon (Tsagaan Sar)
- Tibetan New Year (Losar)
- Vietnamese New Year (Tết)

Lunar New Year falls on the first day of the lunisolar calendar. That means it falls on a different day of the Gregorian calendar every year. This year, Tibetan New Year falls on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and Mongolian Lunar New Year begins on Saturday, March 1, while Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese will celebrate Lunar New Year on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

There are 12 animals assigned to a repeating 12-year cycle in the Chinese Zodiac. This is also used by other Asian cultures, e.g., Koreans and Vietnamese, with some variations. This year, it is the year of the Wood Snake for Chinese, Tibetans, and Vietnamese, and Blue Snake for Koreans and Mongolians.

Lunar New Year is a state, public, or school holiday in a few states, cities, and school districts across the U.S. Some school districts across the U.S. with big Asian American populations also observe Lunar New Year or include educational programs on Lunar New Year. Other communities that celebrate Lunar New Year in the U.S. include, but are not limited to, Chinatowns across the U.S. There are typically parades, dragon and/or lion dances, firework displays, food tours, etc.

Happy Kwanzaa!

Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chair of Black Studies in California State University, in 1966, as a way to bring African Americans together as a community. It is celebrated from December 26 to January 1 every year.

The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili. The ideas and concepts of Kwanzaa are also expressed in the Swahili language, one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa.

The 7 principles of Kwanzaa are: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith). On each day of Kwanzaa, light a candle for that day’s principle on the candle holder (Kinara). Each day of the celebration emphasizes one principle.

Kwanzaa has 7 basic symbols (Mazao - the crops, Mkeka - the mat, Muhindi - the corn, Kinara - the candle holder, Mishumaa Saba - the 7 candles, Kikombe Cha Umoja - the unity cup, and Zawadi - the gifts) and 2 supplemental ones (Bendera - the flag and the Nguzo Saba poster). Each represents values and concepts reflective of African culture and contributive to community building and reinforcement.
