At Kalamazoo College, students have the opportunity to speak German in and out of the classroom. Courses in German are taught at all levels and focus on the German culture, and history of the past and present, while also helping students to further develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Great works of literature, films, television programs, youth novels, and newspaper art

icles provided, also offer fascinating insights into German culture. Outside of the class, students can participate in the German departments weekly activities, such as the weekly game hour, die Spielstunde. There is also a weekly conversation hour, der Stammtisch, as well as a weekly lunch table, der Mittagstisch. Once every few weeks students are welcome to join the German Department for a movie night, Filmabend. In May the German Department holds its annual Maifest, where the German Department gathers to eat cake and drink coffee, while conversing in German. K’s teaching assistants from Germany are always willing and ready to help students with their German.

Another alumni update! 🇦🇹 from Vincent DeSanto '23, currently living in Austria as a grantee with Fulbright Austria! "Hello everyone! I have had the immense pleasure of spending the better part of last year teaching English in a town in Upper Austria called Bad Ischl. My time in Bad Ischl has far exceeded my expectations. The job itself is wonderful, my students are all fantastic and my colleagues are very kind and generous. Upon my arrival, I hiked my way through the Salzkammergut. This region, whose status as the 2024 Kulturhauptstadt has been an added delight, has endeared itself to me. Bad Ischl was the one-time summer escape of Franz Joseph II and his Empress Sisi, along with a wide variety of spiritual exiles ranging from Karl Kraus to Robert Musil. What is particularly nice is its proximity to Munich. I have had the rare chance to develop a closer relationship with my uncle and his family, who live there. Just last weekend I hosted my cousin and his girlfriend in Bad Ischl. We spoke German nearly the entire time, which caused me to reflect upon just how impactful my burying myself within the German idiom is for me. I've continued to translate more German prose and poetry. I have fallen particularly in love with Vienna. I've applied to continue working there next year as a USTA. Vienna has been a fixture of my weekends here, and I feel as though I've gotten to know it just as well as Bad Ischl. I have spent time there exploring the cemeteries, raiding the bookshops, and wandering the museums."

Alumni update from Ben Flotemersch '23, recipient of a Fulbright Austria grant! "I work in Telfs, a village just outside of Innsbruck. Being an english teaching assistant is like being the cool teacher at school that every kid likes because in my class we almost always do fun activities (such as making Super Bowl ads, doing improv comedy or designing roadside attractions) and I'm not allowed to give homework so they're never mad at me. Jokes aside it's a really rewarding experience that allows me to explore teaching as a career and get a chance to live abroad.

Living in Innsbruck is like a paradise for people who like to be active. Innsbruck is nestled in the Alps, so almost every person here age 0-100 can ski (except for me). I spend my free time rock climbing, playing soccer and hiking. I also got a chance to go sledding down the mountain recently! My brother is also a teaching assistant and lives here in Innsbruck with me, which is pretty cool. This is the coolest place I've ever lived and I could imagine myself staying here for a long time!"
