Dear Kalamazoo Area Go Enthusiast,

Claudio Mendoza died on Thursday May 9, 2024, at the age of 72 years.

Claudio started attending the Kalamazoo Go Club in January 2022, and his attendance was consistent until a few weeks ago. Were it not for Claudio's instigation and connections to the Vicksburg Cultural Arts Center, we would not have held a tournament in Vicksburg in October 2022. Claudio's sons Santiago and Cristobal also attended the club several times. We will miss Claudio's intelligence, enthusiasm, humor, and friendship, and his absence at club meetings will be noticed for a long time.

We witnessed Claudio's playing strength increase significantly throughout his attendance at the club. I remember his style as somewhat defensive, although he was not shy about placing a stone inside an enemy framework (whether or not he was ahead).

We don't know much about the circumstances of Claudio's death, other than it was related to a health problem that he had been battling. One may read some details about his life and scientific career here:

Stay well.

Yours,
David
