Position Overview: The Department of Chemistry at Western Michigan University is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to fill the role of Instrumentation Specialist. This position offers a unique opportunity to oversee and manage state-of-the-art instrumentation facilities that support cutting-edge research and education in chemistry while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academic and research environment.
The Instrumentation Specialist should have extensive hands-on experience with a wide range of analytical instruments commonly used in chemistry research and strong technical expertise in instrument operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and data analysis. They should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Prior experience in a supervisory or managerial role is preferred.
Responsibilities:
• Performs routine maintenance tasks, calibration procedures, and instrument validations to ensure accuracy and reliability in analytical measurements.
• Identifies instrument malfunctions or failures. Implements effective repair solutions to minimize downtime and maintain workflow efficiency.
• Provides comprehensive training to users on the proper operation and maintenance of analytical instruments, ensuring that all personnel are proficient in instrument utilization and safety protocols.
• Manages the procurement, inventory, and distribution of liquified and compressed gases, supplies, and spare parts necessary for instrument operation.
• Collaborates with research teams, and assists in data collection and analysis activities, to support various research projects and experiments.
• Participates in departmental meetings and contributes insights to strategic planning discussions, providing valuable input on equipment needs, maintenance schedules, and resource allocation.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Some relevant experience.
• Practical application experience with analytical instrumentation.
• Strong problem-solving, time management, and fiscal management abilities.
• Capable of adapting to various computer systems and software platforms.
• Fundamental understanding of optical spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and chromatography techniques.
• Ability to manipulate small parts and components.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Three years of relevant experience.
• Ability to work with students and faculty to find creative solutions to their analytical needs.
• Operational experience and knowledge of routine maintenance performance validation of optical spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and chromatography.
• Experience with independent research, publication, and teaching.
• Experience managing budgets and reconciling accounts.
