In Los Angeles, wealthy homeowners are hiring private firefighters to protect their properties from wildfires, often securing them through specialized insurance policies. In 15 states, when insured by USAA, this is a standard service in homeowner policies, but not everyone has this kind of coverage, nor can they afford it. This allows the wealthy to access private firefighting teams, raising concerns that resources might be diverted away from public efforts, leaving the broader community vulnerable.

Should access to such services depend on wealth, or should everyone receive equal protection? 🤔

Our opening event of the year was this past Saturday! Huge thanks to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Western Michigan University and The Kalamazoo Lyceum, our co-organizers, for this exciting start to the Life Well Lived series.
